$600 budget, need a system with receiver, 2 speakers, sub

Hi all,

I am a complete noob and need a sound system for my tv in my apartment. I am not interested in running wires to the rear which rules out a 5.1 system for now. I would like to purchase a receiver that can stream music wirelessly and provide support for a 5.1 system for future expansion. I need 2 bookshelf speakers and a decent subwoofer to go along with that. Is that too much to ask for .... for a 600$ budget?

Thank you all.

Are you ok with used? That is the most realistic way for getting a decent system given the budget.

If you are ok with used let us know what major city you are closest to.

I'm okay with used. I am in the Dallas Area.

What if I purchased these components:

1) Polk Audio PSW10 10" Powered Subwoofer $80

2) Klipsch RB-51 II Bookshelf Speaker (pair) - $335 @ Fry's Electronics

That gives me a total of $425.

I don't mind going over $600, but is there a decent receiver around $200?

Thanks

Forget the Polk and site tight....

Onkyo TX-SR707 Asking $300 I would try and get it for $250.

Onkyo TX-SR707 Receiver

There is a Denon 3806 in Dallas/Ft Worth but the guy is off his rocker asking $450. $250 at most.

Save $200-300 for a sub over the next 6/7 months and add that on.

If you want a networking AV receiver, the Denon 1613 will do the trick. It runs $245 from accessories4less: DENON AVR-1613 5.1ch Networking Receiver w/AirPlay 3D ready | Accessories4less.

Accessories4less may be your friend in keeping the price down as it has very reasonable prices in refurbished products that come with a manufacturer's warranty.

2.0 is probably the way to go given your budget. An alternative would be the NHT superzeros and super 8 sub for $500. These are fine speakers and it is to add to it later but it will pop you over your budget: Super Stereo System | High End Speakers | Powered Subwoofer

If you want new speakers on that budget, Fry's sometimes has great sales on the Infinity Primus p363s. They have decent bass so you may not feel you need a sub if you get a pair of those; you may not want powerful bass in an apartment anyway. You can often get the Primus speakers for as low as $110 a speaker. I would wait to see if they have a black friday deal on the Primus tower speakers at fry's and consider a pair of those if they do. The Monitor Audio speakers would be great too, and I am guessing they would have better highs, but it might be tricky to find a matching center to that speaker, and also likely expensive, which is something to consider if you want to expand out to 5.1. The Primus center speaker is a very good one, and easy to find and also inexpensive.

You can get the EmpTek E5bi and 1010i sub for $491 shipped. This is a very good 2.1 set for a small to medium room and you can add the matched center and surrounds later. Pick up the cheapest electronics on Craigslist that meet your connectivity needs. IMO, just wait for the flood of offloaded stuff after Black Friday/Cyber Monday to snag a killer deal.

That Monitor Audio is still a nice option

Also HTD makes some nice speakers - and they are
with-in your area.

How about a pair of Pioneer SP-PK52FS speakers and the Monoprice sub 12" for $103 17. That would be well under your budget and would be a decent starter system.

You may want to check BestBuy for open box + clearance right now for a deal on a receiver. Lots are in the ~$200 range, and are really great AVRs. Denon1612, 1712, 1912, and Yamaha RX-V671 - I've seen them all in the $160 - $250 range. I don't really ever go to BB, but that deal is hard to pass up.

$600 dollars is a tight budget. How big is your room. Trust me you do not want to buy something and not be happy with it.

I bought a HTIB HT-S9100THX for $550.00 5 years ago. I was living in an 3 bedroom apartment, and it sounded okay. I moved to a house, and I am currently still replacing speakers.

I've spent over $600 dollars for a 2.1 set up. I still need to buy the center speaker.

I would suggest to buy the best possible 3.1 set up and build from there.

I would suggest the Pioneer VSX-1022, which is a 7.1 and networked receiver for $250 at newegg.com, and if you have a local Best Buy they will price match.

AVR Pioneer VSX-1022-k $250.00
The Pioneer FS52's x 2 @ $99.99 = $199.99
The Pioneer CS22 x 1 $ $99.99 = $99.99
Sub = BIC Formula F-12 $198.75 at partsexpress.com

Total: $748.73 This doesn't include Tax or any shipping.

NHT is having a Black Friday sale but you may have to sign up to its e-mail list to take advantage of it: NHT Black Friday Secret Sale Page

You can pick up the Superzero monitors and the super 8 sub for $460. That's a heck of a nice combo. It will sound great; there are plenty of reviews of this online if you google around. You get a 30 day audition and NHT pays the shipping back if you don't like them. You are not going to be returning these.

This will be really easy to add to down the road. You don't need a center to start with; I've been using a 2.1 set up for years and have never bothered to buy a center channel.

That leaves $140 if you stick with your original budget. You could get this Denon 1513 refurbished from accessories4less for $140 and hit your $600 (you'll go a bit over once you pick up cables but you can buy them pretty cheap online from mono price): DENON AVR-1513 5.1ch Home Theater Receiver 3D ready | Accessories4less

Personally, I'd put most of my budget to work towards the speakers.
