I did the same thing when I just started out.

Will you be listening to music on this setup?

If so, what will you use for playback? CD player, pc, xbox, etc.

Welcome..

So $4000 with the tv? or just on audio?

I like the focals on sale at a4L for fronts and center, then you can grab the matching surrounds the enitre 5 ch setup is around $1700
FOCAL Chorus 814V 716v Dual 6½ Floorstanding Speakers Gloss Black Pair | Accessories4less
FOCAL Chorus CC814V 800V Dual 6½" Center Speaker Gloss Black Each | Accessories4less
FOCAL CHORUS 705V BOOKSHELF SPEAKERS (PR) at Music Direct

For an avr, I like this denon but there are tons available
DENON AVR-2312CI 7.2 Integrated Network A/V Surround Receiver | Accessories4less $450

Last is subs, 600sq ft is BIG, Im thinking dual vtf2's minimum... :D $1200

If budget includes TV, then I suck for bringing that system up....

The most realistic sounding theater speakers that are affordable that I have heard are the ascend acoustics, I use 3-340's accross the front and 200se's for surrounds, I am very happy with them, they are not winning any beauty contests, but they have a warm honest sound that will rock you to sleep... {I like that, kind of a double meaning, like Rock n Roll, and comfortable mothers arms rocking you to sleep}... I surprise myself sometimes...

but all kidding aside, big room pay attention to your sub choices... I would go dual 12" minimum...

About 600sf
Big room. Ceiling height?
I would consider something like an HSU VTF-15h subwoofer for about a grand, another 800-1k for a receiver : Yamaha , Denon, pioneer, onkyo, and Marantz are all contenders.
1500.00 or so for your front 3 speakers and 500.00 for the rears.
I'll not make a specific recommendation for speaker brand as they are a very subjective item. Listen to as many as possible and decide for yourself. Internet direct has some great sounding stuff and many of the manufacturers have flexible if not free home trials.
Have fun and take your time deciding.
Cheers, Mac

Here goes:

1 of these

$600

2 of these

$1600

1 of these

$700

1 of these

$300

and 1 of these

$1149

Total

$4349

This would be one sweet system. Especially the subs! :D

Is this an acceptable total cost, or do I need to go lower?

There is a 30 day free trial for the floor standing, center, and bookshelf speakers. They will pay shipping BOTH ways. 0% risk.

The subs have a 45 day free trial but you have to pay shipping back.

Those surrounds don't dig very deep. I'm gonna look for a suitable replacement.

The receiver might not be around much longer so i'd pop on that relatively soon if you like the feature set etc.

The speakers I linked wont be available till the 30th, so give me a few days to come up with alternative setups. :D

Nope, not really.

Cables don't make a difference in audio quality. The only thing about wire is selecting the gauge. The gauge is determined by distance/length. My wire is great. Lots of strands and it's not flimsy. It was about $50/100ft.
