HDMI Output on Denon 2312CI

Realized I should have started a new thread for this...sorry for the duplication.

My Denon 2312CI arrived today only to quickly douse my excitement when I couldn't get the menu to display on my TV. I have confirmed that the HDMI cable is good by connecting it to my TV and PS3. However when I plug it into the "monitor" HDMI port on the receiver and turn it on...nothing. The receiver front panel even shows that it's in setup, but nothing displays on the TV. I then tried powering the receiver off and back on then hitting "AMP" then "menu" on the remote, but still nothing.

What am I missing and what else could I try? I really hope I don't have to exercise my warranty fresh out of the box

The manual says that the HDMI out should display the menu to the TV, but I get nothing. My TV just sits there and says no signal. I feel like I'm missing something simple.

More info from what I posted to Denon's support team - I'm quickly thinking I have a DoA receiver:

I received my Denon 2312CI receiver today, but am unable to get it to output anything. No audio, no video, no headphones, nothing. It appears to be functioning fine from the front panel and I can even start up the internet radio and it indicates it's playing music, but there are no outputs to any of my speakers, TV, or headphones. Additionally, no video output will come out of the receiver on either HDMI, component, or composite outputs. I've verified all my cabling and TV inputs selections by connecting other devices and all devices and cabling appear fine. However, nothing on my receiver seems to output. I tried the microprocessor reset as well as a multi-hour power cycle \ unplug and reattaching all the cables and even trying new cables

You are correct it is DOA.

That is not a current model I note. Was that a refurbished unit? I would get a current model. In any event, that unit needs returning.

That stinks -- I hope you get it working!! I always hate dealing with returns via mail... except amazon does it pretty well.

I just got a Denon 1712 and couldn't get audio out to any of my speakers or headphones, etc., until I went through the setup wizard. This could've been because I didn't do something right manually setting it up, but I had that gut-sinking feeling until I went through the wizard and then the magic started happening.

I know that it is basic, and I mean no offense, but I have to ask -- are you sure that you have the TV input selected to the correct HDMI input? did you try other HDMI inputs on the TV? Or even try the receiver with a different TV?

Good luck... not a fun way to start the weekend... :(

Well, its somewhat hopeful that it requires the setup before playing any sound. Since i cant get the on screen display, i havent run the setup. I did confirm the correct input selections on the display, but still no luck. I even went to ensure that is supported the lower OSD resolution. Its an older set, but it work fine with my other HDMI devices (computer and PS3).

It is a current line, but it is also a refurb. Guess I learned my lesson there...I have a three year warranty on a 25 lb chunk of metal :(

Not the first experience I'd hoped for with Accessories 4 Less

Hi. You say that your TV is older - do you know if it is compatible with HDCP? The Denon manual states that HDMI video won't be output correctly if your TV doesn't support that.

Do you have another HDMI display (like a computer monitor) that you can try?

Also, on my Pioneer, it's easier to do the setup when the TV shows the menu, but it's possible to do it without the TV (just a bit more cryptic on the receiver's display). Are you able to do any of the menu by looking at the Denon's display?

I was able to confirm, both through the manual and the use of other HDCP sources, that the display is HDCP compatible and functioning. The Denon support FAQ says that the on screen display can also be shown through component output if there are issues with the HDMI communication, but I'm having no luck there either.

I do have a second TV I could try, but it would be a big pain due to it's particular mounting. If all else fails, that will be my last effort before returning the unit. I'm going to play with the manual and unit a bit more, but I'm not having any luck figuring out how to set it up through the front panel. I previously had a old 1912 and was able to do a panel setup there, but this unit really looks to be OSD only for setup.

I'm just finding it hard to believe that I could lose all outputs on a factory certified refub unit at once since they are all run by different daughter cards, but it sure is looking that way.

That is inconsistent with page 6 of the owner's manual that specifically states that the menu screen and status display cannot be displayed over a component video connection.

After buying a new HDMI cable and trying a second TV per Denon's recommendations (neither of which were successful), Denon believes the HDMI card is bad.

Denon customer support has been very available and polite thus far. We'll see how streamlined the replacement process is, but so far, I'm impressed.

@Adam - you're correct. Denon's site did not distinguish between models when it said that was possible. However, their tech support clarified that "earlier" models can use either HDMI or component output for OSD.

According to the Denon site, it is not current. I had to go to archived receivers to download the manual for it.

Return

Actran, a word of advice, it does not sound like a simple setup issue, the refurb must have been a power up test, period, repack and ship as refurb, you can't blame (or can you) AC4L. Don't torture yourself, demand a prepaid return shipping label and replacement (a tested unit) or a refund and look elsewhere. That really puts a crimp where it hurts and deflates that good feeling about your new speaker purchase.:( I feel for you brother.
Cheers Jeff

To close the thread...

I received my replacement receiver and everything is working great. Setup was a breeze and I'm impressed by the iPhone app as well.

Denon was a bit more skeptical that it could be their unit than I've experienced with other suppliers, but after jumping through their troubleshooting hoops for about a week, they agreed the unit was bad and the return cycle was prompt. From purchase to receipt of a good unit that makes 20 days. Not great, but not awful.

I still love the product and would shop both A4L and Denon again
