Anyone have to buy a special policy for their audio equipment

Just wondering if your homeowners covers high priced gear or not? Is a rider or separate umbrella policy needed?

I just read my policy sounds like $1500 limit, I am going to call Monday and up it for what I have... Between computers tv's and audio equipment, I probably have about $30K, should be insured, and a rider is probably only $65 per year, my wiife's diamond was $68K {appraised over $80K} and the rider for that is like $80 a year...

When in doubt, add it on! My neighbor just had a sewer line fix that cost him 12k-the add-on coverage for that sort of loss was about 35.00 a year. I just added the rider to my homeowners policy.
Cheers,Mac

Our insurer (Liberty Mutual) told me that the audio equipment didn't need a separate rider, so long as we didn't exceed our allocated total content value. They very much recommended a photo or video record of the equipment stored at a secure location, so I could prove ownership. Every policy is different, so what one says is no indicator what another insurer does.

What they did require was a separate policy rider for was the musical instruments. Just like jewelry, there were separate limits. They especially dislike portable instruments like my wife's drum kits and vibraphone, but insuring the piano was cheap. The portable stuff is apparently a prime theft target.

An umbrella policy is entirely different thing. That's only for liability coverage.

One other hint, for those of you with classic cars or sports cars more than a couple of years old in near-new condition - get "agreed value" coverage, or you might be mighty disappointed if a car takes a major hit.

Insurance - good stuff.

On a totally different note, are you planning a vacation or weekend trip anytime soon?

It is probably advisable for your wife to leave the diamond home. You never know what types of ne'er-do-wells you are liable to encounter on the road.

Yah, a thief could retire with my house, her jewelry appraised well over the cost of a new built 3 bedroom starter home...

Thats just the white gold/Platinum with diamonds stuff!!! She has her jewelry in drawers by color and metal, 1 drawer yellow gold, 1 drawer for white gold and platinum with diamonds, 1 drawer with white and platinum no stones, and 1 drawer of misc stuff.

The second picture is the most expensive piece she has, thats about 6 carats total she hardly ever wears it, in total she has almost 50 carats of diamonds and around 300g of gold!!!

Think of it as retirement you can enjoy before you retire....

Anyway, if someone did come to rob my house, they would have to be really determined, I have multiple separate video surveillance systems, multiple alarm systems, and then the only jewelry not in the safe at any given time is what my wife is wearing {and she has a permit to carry, and does}, then the safe, is a built in that is hardwired to the emergency panel... The company that designed my home system works out of NY and designs systems for banks and companies that hold 25,000 times the value of everything I own... But, my insurance is super cheap and the family feels safe...

There are some pretty cool features to todays high tech alarms systems, you can have something on your person no one knows is part of the alarm, like a cell phone, car keys, necklace, watch, ect so if your alarm is disarmed and one of the family members doesnt have that item near the panel it will trigger silent emergency and start sending alerts to who ever else you want alerted, neighbors, family members, private security company ect...

My wife forgot her "item" wasnt on her once and she disarmed the alarm when she came home, before she made it from the garage to the kitchen, my alarm was sending me a video feed {linked to my cell phone} from the zone she was in at my house, I called her and the cops were already there!!!

I know it sounds paranoid but the Petit home invasion was an hour from my home, and we have some friends that knew the family very closely... You just dont know whats going to happen, people suck...

Also if the alarm doesnt work, I just happen to collect 1911's :D

Plus you gotta sneak past my hunting pair, my male doesnt let anything by, I dont know if he hears it or what, but when someone comes to the house, he knows before the security system, and that alerts the signal {it beeps when someone pulls on the driveway then the tripped video zone comes up in the PIP} and he knows at least 3 seconds before the beep, that means he hears them slow down to pull in the driveway, and the house is well insulated and I have a 500ft driveway!!! The best part is he knows when its one of us, if me or my wife come home he doesnt move {except when we just got the new jeep, hes still not used to it and it took him about 2 months to get used o the new house, we just finished it this year} but a strage car he is up a full 3 seconds before the alarm beeps!!!
heres my male on his birthday {at the old house}...

Generally your content coverage is related to the value of your home. So if you have high value content in a home of lesser value, then you might need a rider.

My rig is able to be covered under the contents value that comes with the home owner insurance.

I do have to insure my tractors though! The reason is that the private road I grade and low snow on, is an easement and not my property, so I have to insure them on special policy.

The fishing boat which is just under 10 HP is insured even though the lake in not my property, the sailing boat is likewise covered. The 150 HP boat needs a separate policy.

Thats what I thought, I figured with a larger policy you would have higher allowances for stuff like electronics, but its the same as my old house {limit wise}, the entire policy contents and structure is over 2 million, but it covers everything, from the 2 out buildings to all the contents of my garage, BUT nothing related to the business, so anything related to my business is covered through the business..

He's right about agreed value....talk to anyone here who also plays in go-fast boats like i do....agreed value is the only way to go and very much worth the extra $$ if you have a loss. It will seriously limit your arguing with the insurance company. i've never had to put a claim in on my boat....but I sleep better at night. :)

I know that how the hotrods work, they have them appraised and I have to sign off saying thats what the vehicle is worth..

I no longer have any boats, I learned my lesson, I had a hustler with twin 502's, besides it using $1200 of fuel every weekend, it broke at least once a year... I luckily got out of it only losing about $15K after a few years... But it was fast...

Yup...I have a 32' Sunsation with twin 454's....trying to get out of it right now myself....and looking at a nice haircut to do so. Lesson learned. LOL

That's how I ended upback on here...decided I needed to go back to a "cost efficient" hobby. I just bought a new Sherwood R972 with the Trinnov room correction for $500....I can't even fill the tank on the boat for that....and i'd burn though it in a weekend! The Sherwood will last a decade!! LOL Even my wife can't argue with that comparison!

Don't get me wrong we enjoyed the boat but fuel at the dock was $5 a gallon and with twin 502s we would spend 500 in a weekend. Plus the dock was 3500 a year, and I never spent less than $3000 each year on service from repairs to maintenance and winterizing. One year the wiring harness shorted out and the boat cost me 4000 just to replace the ecms and harness plus about 2 weeks later all the injectors needed to be replaced and because they weren't replaced fast enough some sensors were bad too!!!
If I figured out how much I lost for the 3 summers we had it ill bet it comes to around 15k per summer. I could have bought a little beach house in Warwick ri with a pair of jet skis for just a little more!!!!! Never again I have enough friends with boats that I can go with for a weekend if we like....

But that hustler was FAST. We used to pull skiers and the kids on their rafts around the lake and you could barely get out of an idle

Trust me...I know. Paid 35K for it and got hosed for another 30K in repairs over 5 years. Now that it's all fixed and running right...I'm gonna sell it for less than I owe...and be happy to be done!

But I will miss that sound. Nothing beats two big blocks. Sounds just as nice idling at the dock as at WOT. :D

BOAT= Break Out Another Thousand.

Here...bring back any memories? LOL

Thinking I'll just record it idling on the hose and play it back on the HT whenever I want.....waaaaaaaay cheaper! LOL

And I thought I had more money than sense. Of course, boats are only 2nd level silliness. Then there's planes...

Lol you engine bay looks identical to my twin 502s and I felt a little sick
When I looked at it. My boat was originally over 100k in 5 years it was worth 60 and needed 30k in service!!!! You really need to enjoy boating to drop that kind of money. I bought it 2 years old like new and the original owner used it one season then let his cats ruin the interior so he paid 7k for the new interior and sold it to me. He lost 45k selling it to me!!! I lost 30 when I sold it, and I imagine the guy that bought it off me will sell it and lose 25k. Boat is a bad idea, much rather burn money for heat... At least you get something out of it...

Ps nice boat in real nice shape for age. When I listed mine I put trades welcome. What a mistake that was. I got people offering their Honda civic and ps3 with 50 games plus 900$ lol. They are hard to sell for sure. Luckily when I bought mine I paid cash and when I sold it the money went to me, selling and oweing is a bad feeling I imagine.... Good luck with the sale

True but that is a different level of wealth than you will find on these forums lol. A friend of mine has a small plane and a helicopter. I've been in the copter many times but never the plane, but losing 100k to him is like me losing 1000, our kids go to the same schools and once we were talking and I said wow tuition went up 230 this year". He replied " yeah I read that fast was it only 230 I thought it was 2300" I was like what and you wouldn't question that like "ehh it's just a couple thousand more per child". I wanted to know where my extra 460 was going!!! Lol and he has 4 kids so it would have been over 10k more per year for grade school......
