its phillip, it looks like most of the pics of all these beers are from you. Ok, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, PLEASE USE A BEER GLASS!:p

Some beers, the difference won't be quite as dramatic, but for many beers, it might as well be a completely different beer between being in a proper glass and not. It's like, um, eating a great meal but with a clothespin on your nose, or watching a movie in a high end calibrated setup but with dark sunglasses on.

Not only will you get the bouquet for the smell/taste, you can to appreciate the differences in the head the different bears will have, the carbonation, etc.

Then you can also appreciate the variations in color.

If I could only have one glass, I would pick a Duvel glass. There are a number of artsy versions too now, but a nice thing about the original one is that you can see the color better.

Sam Adams glass is pretty cool and cheap, but it overflows quickly with many beers.

One of the most versatile glasses I've had is the Hennepin glass, but unfortunately it's a bit delicate. I think it's the only beer glass that I've broken, and I think I've broken three of them.

A one trick pony glass that I'm still glad to have is my Carlsberg glass. Carlsberg out of it is criminally smooth. Only other competition that comes to mind was a Boddington straight from the draft.

Anyway, rant over. Best American beer I've discovered in many years is Rogue Hazelnut. I didn't even think I liked hazelnut, and I know I don't like this flavor in coffee. Great in a Duvel glass, but let the beer warm up a bit if your fridge is like 36F or whatever.

Best beer I've discovered anywhere in recent memory was Val-Dieu Triple, it is PHENOMENAL, you can find it in Canada, but my search for it in the US is fruitless.

Cherry flavored. Bound to suck :D
You obviously haven't had an Old Fashioned with a muddled Luxardo Gourmet Cherry, or any of the great cocktails that use Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur. :p (IMO, the 2nd most important modifying liqueur there is after Cointreau.)

I ordered a set of cheap beer glasses the other day, actually. Libbey 12-Piece International Beer Glass Set: Amazon.com: Kitchen & Dining

They are probably what's in the box that was waiting on my porch this evening :)

The reason why I don't like cherry flavored things are because I can't stand cherries. They're gross!

Here's what I'm having now:

I just checked, and for the record, Bud Light Platinum falls into the first category.

Btw, great to see you around!

Ah, whew, because you were just killing me man! :p

You are bound to have stores near you that carry good beers, and when you find them, they are bound to carry at least a few decent glasses. I really do recommend the Duvel glass for your collection, and this one is one of the most common glasses as well. It often also comes in those "gift box combos".

Speaking of Belgian beers, and/or bottle conditioned beers, this is another benefit for you with using a glass. You won't be disturbing the yeast sediment layer on the bottom of the beer, potentially ruining the whole intended flavor of the craft beer. You "decant" the beer. This also means that you don't store these bottles horizontally, but vertically, and if you had a rough drive with them from the store, etc, you might consider letting it settle a bit.

Your Libbey set, I am almost certain I would be using the oval shaped one the most, but I need to try to know. The pint/pub style glass with the bump in the middle, I have one just like it, a Stone Brewing Co. one, and I pretty much never, ever use it, if you were here I would just give you mine. I have a different sort-of goblet style glass (which I normally prefer as a style) by Schlalgl, and I hate it, I think it sucks (but maybe because I'm only supposed to drink Schlagl from it, I don't know). Another goblet style glass that is much better than the Schlagl, but still leaves me wanting more is the Stella Artois glass (but I admit it is good for the intended Stella beer, but it's a beer that I almost never buy).

I would prefer the other Libbey set for $5 more, just to obtain the second glass from the right. I would really rather have that one single glass, than all the others combined. (I don't guarantee it's a great glass, but that's where I would put my money, in a way of speaking.) If I got a second glass, I would take the third from left, but my hopes are only moderate there. My point is that I think it is much better to buy a couple or few superb glasses than a whole bunch of mediocre ones.

Libbey Craft Brew Sampler Clear Beer Glass Set,6-Piece: Amazon.com: Kitchen & Dining

Yeah, give me one Duvel glass, and one Hennepin glass, and I'm a happy camper, and believe I could perfectly enjoy just about any beer I would ever buy. I find them for around $5 where I live, even having special ordered a box of the latter once (gave some as gifts).

I just checked, and for the record, Bud Light Platinum falls into the first category.

Thanks. I only post very rarely now, you know, kind of like what you used to do!

Ok, gots to go, this post made me very thirsty!

Josten, How do you feel about the solo cup?:D I agree that if you like to sit back and enjoy a beer a selection of glasses is essential.

ps good to hear from you, bud. Hope all is well.:)

I would definitely like to just settle on one or two glasses. I don't think I'll take the time to learn all the nuances of beer and the terminology, I just want to enjoy what tastes good :D

Maybe I'll order that second set of glasses too.

We are much more alike than you think, I'm not a beer-supernerd like many of the people you can find these days. I just know what I think tastes good, and you won't necessarily agree with my glassware choices, but I do think it's pretty safe to say you've really been missing out by drinking straight from the bottle.

That said, I wouldn't order that second set. And it hurts me a little to say this, because you FINALLY got some glasses, but if Amazon hasn't changed too much and you can return that box, free shipping, I would do so, and pick up a few glasses at your nearest specialty store. I know there has just got to be one near you. I am not a fan of the glasses in your set, but that's just me, and yeah I'm pretty opinionated for being undereducated. I mean if $20 ain't too much to you, and that you happen to have plenty of space, like to have many guests, sure keep them I suppose, but otherwise, well you know what my personal advice is now.

OK, it comes to mind again, another thing that makes some glasses more versatile than others is that the amount of head is easier to control sometimes for me (the Sam Adams is an excellent glass but the head will overflow with many beers). Also, even if the aperture/circumference might be similar, I swear the bouquet can be dramatically different between otherwise dissimilar glasses.

Alright, don't be like some kids out there who think the least amount of head is better; having a decent sized head, not too much though, helps release the bouquet/flavor. You know, that thing you've been missing this whole time? :p:p

O, Solo Cup!

You are without peer, as my guide in the search for inner calm, the coordination of hand and eye, the honing of true and deadly aim, in the fine game of BEER PONG,

Or as the vessel in which to test the mental fortitude, to steel the nerves, in the web of complexities known as LIAR'S DICE,

Or to strengthen the bond of kinship, to find true brotherhood, on the perilous road to victory alongside my comrade-in-arms, in the ruthless competition of FLIP CUP!

O, Solo Cup, I praise thee!

:p thanks for the pic, learned a few new things there!

I do enjoy a nice head on a beer, which I know I've been missing by drinking from the bottle. In my limited experience, stouts and porters always have a nice one.

I probably won't bother returning the glasses, but I'll try and find some locally. What do you mean by specialty store? I have been to various bars that have very nice beer selections (ie flying saucer, gingerman), but none of them had glasses for sale. I don't mean to sound like an idiot but I do as little shopping in stores as possible, so I dunno what sort of specialty store you're talking about...unless you mean something like World Market :D

I did look at branded beer glasses on amazon from the likes of Hoegaarden and Duvel and so on, but they were more than what I wanted to pay for a single glass or two D:

Many bars, even those that sometimes carry the finest of beers, often have really crappy choices in glassware. I think the closest bar to me uses Anchor Hocking exclusively (and they have a number of good beers mind you), and you can find those mega cheap, for instance. They're just pint glasses.

The bartenders often don't know jack. If for instance you order a Duvel or other bottle conditioned ale, I give it a 50/50 they dump the whole thing in.

That rant over, lemme get back on topic.

Believe it or not, Amazon is not always the cheapest. For certain things, ebay is better, and if you're ok with going to Costco, some of those prices are WAY better for all kinds of things (trash bags, detergent, toothpaste, nitrile gloves, you freakin name it, ladders, fish, steaks, toilet paper, etc, etc, Britta filters, beer . .. )

The glasses at Amazon are overpriced. Like I said, I can find Duvel glasses for about 5 bux, and TBH I was too lazy to say that the Hennepin are actually $4.

Post or PM me your city and I bet I can find you a store that carries some better glasses. Or what I mean is find a liquor store that might actually sell Duvel, Hennepin, Orval, Rogue, and many of the other fine beers named in this thread already, etc, and I bet you they probably have a selection of glasses.

I'm in north fort worth, tx (zip 76131). I usually buy my beer at local grocery stores - the kroger 5 minutes from my house has a decent selection from what I've seen: various german and belgian imports, giant bottles of duvel, la fin du monde, chimay, a lot of others I haven't tried, etc. They probably sell beer glasses in the household goods section, but I've never checked.

I recently rented out another room to a friend, and she's got a Costco membership. I'll start going there with her I guess. I just hate going to stores unless I absolutely have to. My grandparents are nice enough to pick me up the giant kirkland TP thing whenever they go (they only live 10 minutes away from me). I get a lot of things from amazon on the subscribe and save thing and I'll usually just go to Kroger for the rest. I never even thought about Costco's beer selection, since I've not been to one in years. If it's decent, that'll give me even more reason to go :D

All I've been trying to do in the last few months is try a lot of new beer, since I've only been drinking it since december. I haven't been keeping a list, but I think I've tried 60 or so. Most of them have been pretty good :)
