I didn't use to get them, but from what I've read, it's a new government policy. My Droid X started to sound those alarms, too, shortly before I got the new phone.
I got a Samsung Galaxy S3 in white, and I'm on Verizon (discussed in
this other thread). The S3 is freaking sweet, IMO. I like the ergonomics a lot. I grabbed it when I did because it was the last day to grandfather in my unlimited data plan on Verizon and still get a discount on a phone with a contract. I had 3G for two years with speeds around 1.5Mbps, and I never came close to 1GB a month. This phone has 4G, which recently got to my neighborhood, and I get speeds in the 30+Mbps range. I've used about 1.2GB so far, and I've had the phone for about 11 days. The phone is cheaper now a couple of weeks later, but it was worth it to me to keep that data plan.
You really don't need to be technologically ambitious to get into Android or iOS. It's just a matter of if you want just a phone or if you want to have internet capability. I like the option to check e-mail, surf the web, and such on my phone. I don't need it, but I like it. I'm fortunate that I can afford it, so I indulge myself.
I've thought about getting one or two for my parents, but I just don't think that they'd use it much.
