Thanks a ton for clearing it up for me. With me being 90% movies in a mid to high end HT the CBT36's are a better choice for me. I need to just go ahead and pull the trigger...

Oh it'll be high end.

But you can't half-*** the subs. Four subs, and quality subs at that that can deliver good output 14hz - 120hz.

*doh*

I totally forgot that the curved CBT36s are supposed to represent to some extent a true line source. Normal math won't work with these speakers.

While 107db @ 3m would be a decent guesstimate for a point source, a line source might be closer to 111.5db at the same distance (only half the distance loss)

I actually don't know the exact math to use for these speakers. But basically you could possibly hit 105db @ 3m with only ~100w @ 4 ohm. It ""could"" only take about 16w to do what the Phil 3s do with 300w.

Don't quote me on it though :D

Those measurements for me are like speaking binary code to a hillbilly. I haven't researched that much yet. But I get it when you explain it. Thanks again

Hey benbodtke, I just joined up here and have been bothering people in the newb section over logistics on almost the exact setup you're working on. I'm building 4 CTB36's for my brother-in-laws Christmas present, and was having concerns on power (or, over-power).

I think I made my decision to go with an Emotiva XPA-5 to drive the Mid-Bass and Center Channels (I got a pair of JBL CBT-70J's, which will probably be on eBay soon if Audio Artistry is planning a center channel as you say). To run the tweeters, I'm planning on a pair of Emotiva Mini-X A-100's. I guess you could say that I'm afraid, with my limited knowledge of passive monitors, of overpowering the speakers...especially the tweeters.

I think the price on the Emotiva pieces is pretty decent, and I'm on the waiting list for their XMC-1 Pre as well. The crossover Mr. Keele used in his presentations was the Deqx HDP-Express (they did all their configuration on the Behringer, but with the experience I've had with their equipment in my studio I try to stay as far away from that brand as I can), so I think that will solve all my issues (you can download the preset configurations they suggest for both the Behringer and the Deqx on their website).

For Subs, I'm using 3 Genelec 1094a's, recently retired from the studio...I know for a fact they'll shake your teeth loose, but also remain true at low (volume- and frequency-wise) levels.

I'll be interested in hearing of your progress, and hope I'm not too far behind!

Your budget is far better than mine. I would love to be able to purchase that DEQX as I really dont hear too many good things about Behringer.

I believe they are still the designing stages with that center but should be pretty awesome when its done. I will probably just try and pick up a third cbt36 if I am able too, but if not will continue searching for one that can be heard.

For subs I have not decided yet, but will probably stick to what Grant has told me here. He is much more knowledgable than me and I have no problem admitting that.

Are you going to be putting them together yourself? Christmas is a long time away, or is this an overdue present. He really married into the right family.

Blu-Ray
Sony BDP-S370 or Panasonic DMP-BDT 220/320
On bluray, I don't know the price of these, or your budget, but I would consider either the PS3 or more likely the oppo players. Read up on those oppos.

I have read on the Oppos considerably and I have a PS3. Not going to use the PS3 for blu-ray. I also think the Oppos are overpriced. Just my opinion though.

Love my Panasonic BD player.

I think the Panasonic 220 BD is great.

OK, just wanted to throw that out there to be sure you see your other options. IMO, all Sony is pretty much junk (with the exception of playstation line), and the customer support stinks. Go with the panny.

This is what I wanted to hear. LOL

Thanks ADTG
I have 2 Panasonic 110 BD players - one in my HT room & one in my family room. I didn't care for the built-in wifi in the 220 BD since I am using Ethernet wire. Very happy with them.

Now I am interested in the Oppo, why...
Why is this player $500 and thats for the cheap one. Is it worth it, and if it is why. Then the biggest one, how do I explain to the wife that the blu-ray player is worth that much.

Slightly Off-Topic

I'm still a ways away from ordering (I've got a lot of time left, and a lot of crap to clean out of the workshop) but if you're planning on using another CBT-36 for the center channel and can't get them to sell you half a kit, I'll buy the other half for my center for the $1,000. Keep me in mind when you get that far, and I'll be anxious to learn from your experience.
