Sounds great, ready to pull the trigger now. Will make sure I take pics of the build process and post them here.
THe DIY board is a little further down. We'll definitely be excited to read your build thread and especially the subjective comments afterwards :D

When I graduate I plan to use CBT36s as my surround speakers based on what I read in Floyd Toole's book :D

When I first fire them up, I will make sure to have a bottle of XO Cognac in your honor.

I have been reading and have narrowed some stuff down. I need some opinions to narrow some things down though since there are about 15 million choices.

Speakers
CBT36 or Philharmonic 2/3

Receiver
I was leaning toward the Marantz brand since every other post about Denon is negative lately. Was thinking about the SR6005/7005 or the Yamaha RX-3000

Blu-Ray
Sony BDP-S370 or Panasonic DMP-BDT 220/320

Crossover
DBX Drive Rack PA Plus or DCX 2496

Amp
Crown XLS or Emotiva XPA3/5

Subs
Rythmic FV12X2 or SVS PB12X2

Tell me what I can mark off. Also anyone against refurbished Marantz? Do I need more or less?
If you're able to build the CBT36's, building your own subs will be a piece of cake!:D

No way, this is mostly soldering. Building my subs is woodwork, but not only that, knowing the exact dimensions the sub requires. My $500 sub would sound like a $30 walmart sub. I will leave that to the professionals. I am a firm believer in paying people for their expertise. I am an aircraft mechanic and I will stick to that. I def wouldn't want the pilots coming out here thinking they know how to work on it because they fly it.

Besides I will be stimulating the economy a little more by buying them... Its what I keep telling myself for justification for spending so much money, otherwise I tend to have buyers remorse.

Nonsense! My Martin J King worksheets are probably a better CAD software than most professionals use, as is something like hornresp. Your ~$500 sub would be closer to double/triple that in value.

Yeah, but buying amps, drivers, raw wood, etc will still have the same effect.

Yeah but I really suck at woodwork and it would probably look like crap. But maybe I can give it a show. I will do some homework on it. Any good links to some nice designs.

'Tis a box. Make it a sealed triangular prism and you can hide one in each corner.

You would get plenty of help here in designing it. Do you know anybody who does woodwork? Sub enclosures require require some number crunching, but building is pretty straightforward. Even if you paid a friend $100 - $200 to build it, I mean "them" ;), you could still come out wayyy ahead of commercial models.

Well I have did some building myself. A couple of years ago I built my own speakerbox for my vehicle. It held 4 Alpine 12" Type R's, ran by 4 Alpine M450 and two Rockford fosgate dig caps. I did all the math myself in what dimensions were required and it came out great. Then the adult in me came out and said I was not in a mid life crisis and to sell it.

Well, there you go! You can build a box! :D

Can stereo just over a $1000 invested, home theater is going to be over $25000. Dont want to skimp on one of the most important things in the room.

Don't consider it skimping to DIY. Consider it getting ridiculously awesome performance that commercial subs simply will not match.

HAHA, just researched the Lab Gruppen FP14000. No even coming close to that...

With high powered amps like that though you really need your circuit breakers and cabling capable of handling the power draw.

My point was only that you could end up with a crazy system without spending crazy money.

Just remember that the biggest advantage to multiple subs is when they're located dissimilarily, not when they are in the same box.

Ok, the Philharmonic thread has made it harder to decide. Would I need a sub with the Philharmonic 3's? This is really hard....

All stereo box speakers will need subs if you like accurate, controlled response 15hz - 100hz, because of the room.

Even aside from flat response, even if the Phil 3s hit 25hz which they do, they are only 85db sensitive.

If you look at a movie at reference, LFE normally means ~115db @ 3m capability and front speakers should be cruising along @ 105db @ 3m

The Phil 3s, with a 300w @ 4 ohm amp, will deliver about 97db @ 3m

Now for the most part that's probably "fine" but really I'd leave those speakers for music listening. That's a lot of demand to be putting on speakers and I really don't like the idea of running speakers near and possibly beyond their limits.

The CBT36s with a 500w @ 4 ohm amp, will deliver above 107db @ 3m over the bass region at least.

Obviously at 97db they are less strained, as they need only 50w @ 4 ohm to do it.

Watts aside, neither speaker is likely to be very composed 15hz - 80hz at those kind of SPLS. You really need subs. Multiple, highly capable subs. Yes for classical music the Phil 3s will shake your room and reproduce pipe organs etc but that's a totally different deal from movie LFE. Besides movie LFE there's also the matter of flat response that I mentioned earlier, and you'll be limited by what stereo speakers can do in your room from a flat response perspective.

I'm not saying the Phil 3s aren't a great speaker but I'd definitely lean towards the CBT36s for movies, although they will sound just wicked for music even at low levels. Now if it's not a high end HT, but just a living room where you critically listen to music and watch some TV, or a dedicated music room, then the Phil 3s make perfect sense :)

Both are... extremely good speakers.
