I have been kicking around the idea of weather or not to upgrade my reciever for a while. Mainly to take advantage of HDMI so I could more easily add a blu-ray player and decode the newer audio formats. This would be in my dedicated theater room which we use a lot for just general watching TV plus movies.
I have had good luck out of my current Yamaha so I would probably be most comfortable sticking with that brand. The big question is which one of the newer recievers would be comparable power wise to the RX-V1400 I have now? The specs are formatted just a little differently now making it a little more interesting trying to compare. I don't want to change recievers and find out I took a step backward. I don't turn it up all the time but occasionally we do enjoy an action movie cranked up pretty good.
I do have another question my TV is also older but I have no intention of replacing it any time soon. Currently it is hooked up via component video. It doesnt have an HDMI input but does have DVI. I assume I can just run a HDMI/DVI adapter and hook the video up that way from the new reciever correct? It does only support 1080i though is that an issue? I would assume their are recievers out there that upscale/downscale and allow you to select the output reslolution settings that are compatible with your monitor correct?
Initially I would probably leave my current DVD player hooked up will the newer recievers take the component input from a DVD and output it through the HDMI? I have read some only output what they input not sure if that is how they all are. Probably a simple question but if not I assume the reciever/remote can be programed to switch the input on the TV and would just require another connection between the reciever/TV?
My laptop has a HDMI output & a bluray player in it so I could use that to begin with before I purchase a dedicated bluray player.
I ended up winning a Sony 5.1 speaker/sub setup at a banquet I was at I intially thought about sticking it in the living room but I would need a second receiver and would need to do some serious wiring though the walls. Neither of which I am real thrilled about. If I replace the 1400 with a new reciever I could use this one in the living room or I could sell it and the Sony stuff to get some more cash towards a better reciever.
setup is as follows
Reciever: Yamaha RX-V1400
HDTV: Mitsubishi 65" WS-65313
Main speakers: Klipsch RF-52
Subwoofer: B & W ASW600
Surrounds: Klipsch RS-25
Rear surrounds: Klipsch RB-51
Center channel: Klipsch RC-52
DVD player: Yamaha DVD S540
DirectV reciever: HDDVR HR22-100
OTA tuner: Directv AM21
