Ok, I seem to have gotten this virus or whatever it is.

Is something like this a safe way to remove it?
Removal instructions for AV Protection 2011 - Malwarebytes Forum

Remember, I know next to nothing about computers but I would like to fix this as cheap as possible.

For reference, I have ESET NOD 32 Antivirus for protection. It seems to catch this virus and quarantine it after a scan but the virus comes right back.

HELP!

It's too bad that you're hiding from Alex, and that Alex now wants to stay away from you. I'm sure that virus would run screaming down your ethernet cable when it saw Alex approaching your motherboard with his vacuum.

Hmmm, that second sentence seems like something out of a Mad Libs game.

This is what my last scan showed:

That website might be legit, but I don't know.

I've used Spybot - Search and Destroy for years. I mention it because AV Protection 2011 appears to be malware, and Spybot can help get rid of that.

Just a thought. There are other methods that get recommended on here for this stuff, but I don't remember them all. I just don't surf Italian porn sites anymore. :p :D

ALL traditional anti viral and spyware programs are now obsolete. Yes, they are totally obsolete and should no longer be used.

For once Microsoft have done something right.

First remove all your current spyware and antiviral programs.

Next load Microsoft Security essentials.

It is FREE!

It runs seamlessly and unobtrusively. It runs deep in the operating program and does not slow the computer at all.

Both my sons, one a designer engineer and the other a senior software developer for IML, say that this is absolutely the way to go.

By the way you must remove all other viral and spyware programs before downloading Microsoft Security Essentials.

ParadigmDawg, if you can download this program it might sort it out for you.

I just did as the Dr. ordered and nothing has changed.
My computer is still clean as a whistle.
What incredible luck.

Gone is AVG, Malware Bytes, Ad-Aware and Windows Defender.

Did you read the reviews of MSE? It's nice, but not perfect...and we all know those former Eastern-block sites that you so like to visit. :D

I didn't read the reviews but just dumped ESET and loaded MSE. What do I have to lose at this point? Plus the doctor ordered it.

My computer is 50% quicker already.

Nothing against Mark, but that'll mean more to me once we have biological computers. :)

That doesn't mean that it's catching everything. ;)
It may not catch everything. Who knows what some crafty malicious nerd may think up?

However reviews like this show it does as well or better than anything else.

Previously I was using AVG free version for virus and I admit I did not have a problem

However Spyware was another matter. Spybot, really slowed the computer down and let significant amounts of Spyware through.

So I went to Malaware. This slowed the computer less, but also let Spyware through.

I have been using Microsoft Essential for a couple of months now. The computers are fast. It is seamless and is batting 100% so far.

That is my experience. I have to say it is head and shoulders over any other programs I have used.

As one aside, the only virus I ever had, I know for certain was downloaded in a Norton antivirus update! It was a very bad one as well.

When I went to Norton support, they admitted the problem and said I had to purchase a competitors product to solve the problem.

So you can guess what happened to the Norton program on my computers.

If I have a problem with Microsoft Essentials I will post and alert you all promptly.

By the way, some have kept their other programs after installing Microsoft Security Essentials, to see if the program works. This you must NOT do. This will create serious security problems. You must remove all other anti virus and Malaware programs before installation. This is very important.

Thanks, Mark. I appreciate the info, and I hope that I didn't come across as putting you down - that wasn't my intention! After you posted your initial remarks on MSE, I checked it out on the internet. I found a few reviews, and they were quantifying the percentage of malicious code that MSE would catch. I stopped after the second review, as it didn't seem that high. Your personal experience with it, though, shows that you at least have had good results over a decent amount of time. I'll look into it more today. AVG seems to be bogging down my computer lately, so I'm certainly up for trying something new. I just want to read more about the details.

Adam's respect ... :)
I lost that over a year ago...
Well, just start drinking again, Captain Healthy. :D You know I respect ya, Dawg - don't make this into a chick moment. :p

Ok, One of the best tools to clean PC is Kaspersky Rescue CD.
Kaspersky Rescue Disk 10

It's different from all tools mentioned above, since It doesn't require Windows running at all, means any rootkits etc.. have nowhere to hide.

Make sure to update the db before scan.

After that install/run MS Security Essentials.

Is that a disc we should all keep in our tool kits?

I should have told them to update windows to the latest version. I did do that before installing Microsoft Security Essentials.

Yes, also for advanced folks - you could also make it onto USB stick...

I meant update the Kaspersky Rescue AV, once you boot the pc.
