OK, here it is:

I just received my brand-new Sony CDP-CX355 300 disc changer. I get it hooked up and loaded (50 CDs on opposite sides to maintain balance of the carousel), hit "Play", it pulls a CD, disc starts spinning. . .and nothing. Well, it does have some very faint clicks, as if something isn't engaging. I shined a flashlight through the window and everything APPEARS to be functioning, but no music playing.

Yes, it is level.
Yes, it is hooked up correctly.
Yes, the discs are clean.
I don't think I have static built up in it.
I have pulled the power cord to attempt to reset it (as stated in another post).

Please help if you can.

Thank you.

Welcome to Audioholics.

Since it's a new unit I'm thinking it will be something simple.
When you loaded the disks did you make sure all the label sides are all facing to the right?

The obvious questions would be how do you have it connected, what is it connected to, and how is the receiver configured?

Rickster71: Yes. All discs are loaded correctly with the label side facing to the right.

j_garcia: I have it hooked up to a Yamaha HTR-5063 AV Receiver with 7.1 ch surround. The Yamaha recommends connecting a CD player to AV3 input and running the sound field program as "straight"; I did not think that to be advisable, as AV3 has a yellow video jack input and an orange co-ax jack. I took the red/white cable which came with the Sony unit and connected it into the Audio 1 jacks.

I can select a disc on the Changer, it will then proceed to that slot, load the disc, and start spinning it. No sound other than nine faint clicks come out (and that is not through the speakers). It will attempt to read the disc three times, then proceed to the next disc. As I said, the clicks sound as if something is attempting to engage, but failing.

Also, these are pre-recorded discs in excellent condition. There are no CD-ROM or CD-R loaded (even though the literature states that it can play some of these if they are finalized).

The red and white connection should be fine. So with the receiver set to Audio 1, it doesn't give you sound? How about if you try it into a different input? On the Audio 1 selection on the receiver, in the setup menu, what actual audio input is assigned to it?

Technically, you CAN use the coaxial input on AV3 if this player has a coaxial audio output, since the receiver will be doing the bass management whether you have it hooked up digitally or analog no matter what.

If reset fails, return it for a new one!

LadyCat,

Given your double checking the connections, CD label loading, and the "click, then next disc" symptom; if the reset does not work I would return the unit for a new one.

I own a 355 and an older 335. They have operated flawlessly for over 10 years and survived several military moves, so the one you have appears to be a lemon--happens sometimes.
