There seemed to be a gender schism on the violence thing (The guys thought it wasn't over the top for a sorta-action movie), but the idea was interesting. A mysterious drug gets to an unmotivated slacker...it's like cocaine also that boosts your IQ by about 200 points, but like all powerful things, it comes with a cost and you won't know what the cost is until it's due. They guy becomes a Wall Street shark but runs into a rival in Robert DiNiro. I liked it and thought the designer drug theme could be in the near future and that if it does, things like this might happen. It's a middling film; there are worse ways to spend 2 hours.

It was a bit more violent than I expected, but wasn't exactly an action film. There are some holes in the plot, but I thought it was a pretty decent script. Worth a rent for sure.

Being a pharmacist, I think the odds of something like this happening is like humans living with aliens from outer space. The funny thing about drugs is that a lot of their "discoveries" and "usage indications" occur by pure chance or luck. For example, Viagra was initially meant to be used as an antihypertensive agent. We all know what kind of "adverse effect" came out of that. But I enjoyed this movie a lot.

I watched this one again on BD and, while I agree with you on the likelihood of such a drug, I got the impression that it was some sort of metaphor (perhaps accidental) for all the talk about how smart Wall Street guys were, prior to The Crash. Their smartness seemed to leave them at some point (like running out of those little clear pills) and the other 99.9999% of us were left to clean up the mess in our plodding way. A metaphor like that made me like the movie in a shallow kind of way.

Nothing overly mind blowing but still engaging enough and thoughtful, and sometimes that's all we need. I thought this was a good movie. Nothing overly mind blowing but still engaging enough and thoughtful, and sometimes that's all we need. Even the "plot holes" made for good discussion. One I liked (not sure if plot hole exactly) was a discussion of the physiological ramifications... Assuming we currently utilize 20% (or less) of our brain, and our brain consumes something like 20% of the O2 and calories we take in, I guess a 100% active brain would send one's appetite through the roof. "Hard" thinking with so much capacity could send a person above their aerobic threshold... like doing a 400 meter sprint! Another interesting point to the movie that some may have missed... the effects of the drug were proportional to a person's baseline intelligence. The slacker/author protagonist was a lazy bum genius type with a seriously high IQ to begin with.
