I've never bought a real subwoofer before and need your help (please)!

If you want to go a little more in depth than just listening for a nice, even volume during the THX sweep, you can use that test tone "CD" that I mentioned before and a measurement device like the RadioShack SPL meter or just an SPL Meter App for your smart phone ;)

Without a manual EQ of some kind, there won't really be much that you can do about any frequencies that are a bit too high or too low. All you can really do is see how Audyssey has EQ'd your frequency response. But measuring can sometimes be fun...just to know. Also, Audyssey 2EQ isn't exactly very granular in its measurements, so it might still leave quite a few peaks and valleys. That test tone "CD" plays individual 1Hz intervals for a 10 second span at each Hz! So it is very granular and will really demonstrate any frequencies that peak or dip.

If it really bugs you, you can fiddle with placement and phase some more, but there isn't a whole lot that you can do :p Bass traps can help to take some of the room's acoustics out of the equation. Most rooms have a handful of really bad frequencies that result in huge peaks or dips, and bass traps can help to quell those.

And an EQ system of some kind can smooth out all of the smaller peaks and maybe some of the small dips. The Behringer Feedback Destroyer is a very popular, quite inexpensive manual EQ, but you can wind up fiddling with that thing until the end of time!

There are also automated EQ systems, like Velodyn's SMS or the SVS SubEQ that uses a higher level of Audyssey. But those cost more than your new sub! Newer receivers with MultEQ XT or MultEQ XT32 also offer a lot more EQ in the bass, so one day, you might decide to upgrade your receiver and just get better bass EQ along with it!

You can see by now that it's easy to go crazy when it comes to bass :p Lots of people do. But one really important thing to remember is that humans really don't hear bass very well. We suck pretty bad at hearing bass, actually :p So don't go pulling your hair out over one or two peaks or dips in your frequency response, and don't spend all your time trying to find the PERFECT spot for your sub or the PERFECT cross-over with phase PERFECTLY aligned. Unless you listen with your head in a vice, your listening position isn't always exactly the same anyway, so some variances are going to occur!

But if you "Crawl for bass", let Audyssey do its thing, and confirm the setup with the THX bass sweep, you should have a pretty darn good bass setup! Nice and even, seemless handoff between speakers and sub, and maybe a little "goosed" output for some really spine-tingling, gut-rumbling movies and games :D

The eD A2-300 vs. a HTiB sub will DEFINITELY be a huge upgrade for you. Right now, there is so much bass in your movies and games that you don't even know you are missing! Outside of dialogue intelligability, I'd say that bass is the thing we notice most in movies. You should not be worried. A subwoofer upgrade in your case is going to be very noticeable and well worth the cash ;)
I too am looking for my first sub, unable to get any good demos back here. How much of an upgrade would a good sub be for music? Would it be of much help for music at all?
Am looking at subs like HSU VTF-2 MK3 & Rythmik FV12 (room sized 12x14x9).

Just wanted to say thanks for the long write up about sub placement and tuning! I completely missed it the other day!

1)Does length of the RCA wire from the woofer to the receiver have any effect on its performance? Kinda like speaker wire needing to be a certain gauge after a certain length, etc...

2)Does having a Y-adapter really improve performance over just one plugged into the left/lfe port? Seems kind of ridiculous.

You're welcome! :)

In a home setting, the sorts of lengths of RCA cable that you'll be using won't have any effect on the signal. With a super long run, you'd want to make sure that your RCA cable has really good shielding so that it doesn't pick up stray RF or EM interference. But in a room size like yours, the length of the cable won't be anywhere near long enough for you to need to worry about it ;) Just grab any RCA cable from monoprice.com and you'll be all set!

A Y-splitter is not necessary. The subwoofer is designed to work with the single RCA cable coming from your receiver's Sub Out connection. That is why the "Left" plug on the subwoofer is also labelled "Line In". The "Right" plug is only there for old gear that does not have a dedicated "sub out" connection. Old stereo pre-amps only had "Right/Left" output plugs, so the subwoofer has those plugs to support that old gear. In your case, with a modern receiver, you only need the single RCA cable and the lone "Left/Line in" plug on your subwoofer ;)

For 55 and Sylar and others,

I wrote a long post here in another thread that I think you might like to read. I just go over a lot of the basics of bass and subwoofer design in very general terms. If you're interested in subwoofers and bass, it's good, easy-to-read info to keep in mind :)

I enjoyed that, very informative, thanks.

We really should just combine everything you write and make it into a sticky. I feel like i have to thank you for every post just because they are so great lol.

Hmm...the people at Elemental Designs offered me a $15 which is nice. :p I like how they continued to build stuff in America and raise prices a little vs go to China. Thinking strongly about that, i've heard its a good sub for HT.

Otherwise, i'd get the HSU, but instead of the STF-2 I would end up waiting & saving a lot longer and getting the VTF-2 MK 3, which would be superior to any of these subs (and more expensive).
Sorry to bump an old thread...I was just wondering who you talked to/how you got [what I'm assuming] is a $15 discount?

I'm thinking about the A3s-250 for a bedroom 2.1 bookshelf setup. Thanks!
