Velodyne DEQ-15R vs Paradigm DSP-3200

Hello,
Im trying to decide with sub to go with a paradigm Monitor 7 5.1 package. Will be Monitor 7 fronts, ADP 190 Center channel, ADP 190 surrounds. They have it with a Velodyne DEQ-8R but I dont think that is enough for my space (~25 feet long x ~18 wide, burber carpet, drywalled). So I can go up to the DEQ 12R or 15 R. The 12 R is rated less than the 3200, so have to go to the 15R to get more than the paradigm 3200, or do I need to go up to a 3400?

Receiver I am planning on is the new onkyo tx-nr809, as it seems to have the most features around ~1000 unless someone can put me onto something better at the same price point.

I guess what Im asking is for my room dimensions, which of the above would you recommend (or 2 smaller units? Is that the better way to go?). Im buying it in a package, so I dont really have an option to order one of the many online subs some people have recommended.

This system will be 75% movies as a HT, and 25% music.

For my space, what do you think is the best set up?? Also, how do I know if the cross over will work with the paradigm speakers? Sorry, new at this.
Thank you!
T

You always have an option, it's your money! Just purchase the speaker package and buy the sub separately. For the money, I wouldn't buy any of those subs. Going separately, how much can you realistically spend on the sub/s? For a room your size, minimally I’d be looking at a single HSU VTF-3. For a dual setup, my preference, I’d be looking at the Epik Legends.

Those subs look great, unfortunately neither company ships to Canada...

Any other ideas?

Does anyone own any Funky Waves Subwoofers?? Good, bad?

Thank you again!

SVS sells their subs in Canada through Sonic Boom Audio. You should look them up.

Funky Waves is also located in Canada as well.

See If sonic boom still sells the discontiued SVS PB12nsd (ported 12 inch box) or you can check out the PC12nsd (ported 12 inch cylinder shaped sub). They are the same sub in terms of performance but different form factors

Unfortunately they pb12nsd is sold out until August. The pc12nsd is available.

What are your thoughts on 2 smaller subs rather than 1 larger sub? I will have 7.2 capability (although I understand you can achieve the same with a Y adapter if only 7.1).

Thanks again.

I wouldn't bother with shipping a sub to Canada if at all possible. I'd suggest contact Nathan @ FW's and give him your budget & requirements to see what he'll come up with. I own a FW sub that I'm extremely proud of and your welcome to come over... if you live in the GTA...:).

One of these would work well for your space if the price fits the budget:

Two lesser subs can help even out a room's bass response, but each needs to meet performance requirements on its own. For example, the sub in question should at least dig down <25 Hz @ -3dB to merit a consideration for HT. At lower price ponts, this one spec is harder to meet.

I know you said you're looking at packages, but

EMOTIVA ships worldwide

the sub-12 is on sale again right now http://emotiva.com/ultra_sub12.shtm

I have a sub-12 and a dsp-3200 and I think they are both great woofers.

I also as you can see have a complete Paradigm system, and they both sound very good with the Paradigm speakers.

I've just found out today that I can ship to the boarder and pick them up there, so the internet direct option is now available for me.
My room is 23 X 20 X 7.5 (LxWXH), drywalled, carpet floor, painted ceiling. The epik legend and the HSU VTF-2 seem to be in the same price range, although one is sealed and one has ports. Epik has a better buy for two units than HSU.

i am in Calgary Alberta. Has anyone ordered either of these subs? Im a little gunshy to just order them and hope for the best.

Velodyne DEQ 15R onsale for 650 roughly, Paradigm 3200's are ~750ish. Seems to me reading and having comments on other posts that the velodyne and paradigm's are the worst way to go (over paying for these compared to internet direct). Any comments, or other suggestions. I'd like to be less than $1000 all said and done. I dont mind driving to the boarder (3 hrs) to pick something up if I had to.

Thank you in advance!
Don’t know if you’re aware, but it’ll cost a few hundred in fees to take them across the border.

Hi AVRat,

Other than GST, what other fee's are you refering to? Any US goods I have imported in the past are duty exempt, and if you bring them across yourself, no other fee's. Can you elaborate please.
Thank you
T

I demoed the DEQ-15R and the Paradigm SUB12 and the Velodyne sounded better IMO. The SUB12 just didn't produce enough punch for my taste.

I demoed the SUB12 at General Audio in Calgary, and the DEQ-15R at Radio Craft.

Plus 1 on the Funky Waves subs....

Spectacular Build quality - great drivers...
It still amazes me that some of us (Canadians...I mean) overlook Nathan as a viable option and would rather buy ID going through all those import troubles. I'd hasten to say that most don't realize FW's builds less expensvie but still high quailty custom subs using other driver than TC sounds. He'll build to suit but to each his/or her own..I guess.:)

The Acoustic Elegance, CSS, and TC Drivers he uses are excellent at what he's charging. The Fi, Mach V, Peerless, and Dayton drivers are as good as anything at the price points as well.

Maybe he needs to market himself better.
