In the process of finding a good sub to match my HT setup nicely. In the process of building an new home and I'm fortunate enough to have a dedicated HT room.

Room dimensions are 16'x15'x9'

Receiver Marantz SR7005

Speakers

Two - Klipsch RF-7 II's

One - Klipsch RC-64 II's

Two - RS-62 II's

Two - CDT-5650-C's

Now I'm on the hunt for a good sub.

So far I've demoed the following.

Paradigm SUB12

Velodyne DQR-18

& James Loudspeaker Cinema 15

Start researching all the Internet Direct brands:
-SVS
-HSU
-Elemental Designs
-Epik
-Seaton
-Funky Waves (especially if your Canadian)
and lots of others.

You'll generally get more for your money compared to B&M brands.

What is your budget? Any size restrictions? If you have a dedicated room, why not look at getting two? :D

I'd like to keep it under $1500.

I've done some research on SVS, HSU & Funky Waves, the only problem I have with companies like this are not being able to demo them.

auditioning in a demo room is useless. 80% of bass sound quality is dictated by the room. subs ----mostly--- dictate sound quantity.

I recommend three fw10s if possible.

Very true, more reason to have a source located in my city, that way if I'm not happy with results it doesn't cost me $400 in shipping fee's.

If you post what city you live in/near there may be members that can let you audition if they have something that you are looking for.

anything you can find in a shop will just be $400-$1000 overpriced....and undersized so as not to scare away wives.

And like I said, if you aren't satisfied, its because of your room and setup most likely.

Does your setup allow for a dual sub setup? Or would you prefer just one sub?

If you're only buying one sub with a $1500 budget with the plan to buy a second eventually, then you should take a look at the four subs Paul Appoliono reviewed in that general price range...

Consider that companies like JL, Velodyne, Paradigm, PSB, and Klipsch pretty much couldn't submit subs to this shootout because they likely knew they'd be outclassed dollar for dollar.

If you're not buying with the plan to buy a second eventually, then you should definitely get two lesser subs (and perhaps leave yourself open to add two more eventually). This will definitely give you better sounding bass. Read this article for example:

Right at the money would be dual HSU VTF-3s and there would be no lack of good bass in that room. Heck, for that room, dual Epik Legends would be more than sufficient.

Hi guys+gals,
Im in a similar situation. Looking at paradigm monitor 7 5.1 system, and trying to decide on the sub. I've just found out today that I can ship to the boarder and pick them up there, so the internet direct option is now available for me.
My room is 23 X 20 X 7.5 (LxWXH), drywalled, carpet floor, painted ceiling. The epik legend and the HSU VTF-2 seem to be in the same price range, although one is sealed and one has ports. Epik has a better buy for two units than HSU.

i am in Calgary Alberta. Has anyone ordered either of these subs? Im a little gunshy to just order them and hope for the best.

On the other hand, the local shop has velodyne and paradigm. Velodyne DEQ 15R onsale for 650 roughly, or I could go smaller and put two units in. Paradigm 3200's are ~750ish. Seems to me reading and having comments on other posts that the velodyne and paradigm's are the worst way to go (over paying for these compared to internet direct). Any comments, or other suggestions. I'd like to be less than $1000 all said and done. I dont mind driving to the boarder (3 hrs) to pick something up if I had to.

Thank you in advance!

Titanite,

I have demoed the Paradigm SUB12 and it didn't perform near as well as the Velodyne DEQ-15R. In case you are wondering?

I to live in Calgary AB.

I managed to find a company out of California that has a James Loudspeaker Cinema 15 that they are willing to ship to me.

I have two buddies who currently use these and they are simply amazing! I can have it shipped to my door for around $1200.00

Hey Rippyman,
The sale on the velo in town is pretty enticing. I think I could probably get a better product if I spent more and drove to the boarder, but I think Im goign to go that route and buy it local.
Thank you for the info.
