Sunfire Universal Subwoofer Wireless Kit First Look

Information on the Sunfire Universal Subwoofer Wireless Kit is very thin right now. But at $80 each for the transmitter and receiver and the ability to pair two receivers with a single transmitter, color us intrigued. We know they are using 2.4Ghz transmission with 16-bit resolution and a 48 khz sampling rate. Sunfire claims 100% signal accuracy up to 25 feet given their digital transmission. Without more information about how many transmitters you can have working in the same room and how they are combating interference, our excitement will have to be subdued. At least until we get our hands on a kit.

If someone can't be bothered to run a cable - really not that hard if you're at all motivated, even in an appartment - I wonder if they'd be inclinde to want to put the unit anywhere other than right next to their stereo stack in the first place.

Some homes just don't lend themselves to a hard wired run and for us a wireless solution works great. I'm using the Outlaw OWA3 which works just fine. Because it has three stereo channels you can have multiple transmitters driving 1-3 independently calibrated subs or subs and powered surrounds.

If the sub is in a different location and the electrical system isn't great, ground loops are common and for this price, it may be better to use this instead of a ground loop isolator. I'm doing a job now where the sub wouldn't work next to the electronics because A) the cabinet is in the informal dining area and the speakers are 40' away, next to the TV. The wall houses a fireplace and comes forward from the double doors to the screened-in porch by about 30", so I put a sub in the wall (in a box) to the right of the fireplace. It worked great until the client decided the fan noise from the distributed audio amp was too loud and she asked me to move it. That receptacle is on the same breaker as the rest of the system at my request to the electrician, who understands why it's important. Guess what- instant ground loop and hum. With the isolator, it's OK but I lost a lot of signal level and it has to go 35', across all kinds of old electrical wiring, with no way to run it in conduit or separate the cable. I'm going to pick up one of these and see if it will work in that application, so I can get the results I had before.

what was supposed to be a simple cable run through my living room walls for my surrounds turned into a 6 hour nightmare for my installers. and they are professionals. so be "bothered" to spend hours tearing through walls, fishing wire, drywall repair, and painting or $80 for a box that you plug into the wall? yeaahhh, i can't be bothered.

One heck of a latency spec - 34ms total between the transmitter and receiver. If you don't have a room calibration program in your pre-pro such as ARC or Audessy to take these delays in to account, i believe you're in for a world of hurt.

The units are very small (1/2 a cigarette pack) & come with the RCA cable and power line necessary. Set-up by following the sequence of connections & power-on in the instructions and in just several minutes your subwoofer is cable-free. This allows optimum placement untethered to the receiver or pre-amp. Works as advertised, which is to say like a charm.

This is pretty interesting, looking forward to the review. At $80, if it actually works, it would have saved me the 6-10 hours or so of drilling holes into my basement ceiling beams and running a $100 40' subwoofer cable (or whatever it cost) way back when. Not to mention the recent aggravation when I the cable stopped working and I had to pull it out to figure out why, only to learn it was the RCA adaptor that had broken inside and I had to resolder it.

Mind you, I guess "wireless" has the potential for other issues.

Update

Sometimes I find the receiver which sits atop the subwoofer no longer in place– it has toppled helter-skelter off the sub altogether due to the vibrations. And it is still performing not missing a beat. I thought of securing it with a velcro adhesive but now I just leave it on the floor, out of direct line-of-sight with the transmitter. I have one additional sub not used & will likely bring it on-line with another receiver unit.
