Problem with new Vizio M550NV

Was wondering if someone could help me out before I lug this thing back to Sams Club.

I just bought the Vizio 55 inch M550Nv LED. Picture looks good. Wireless doesn't work (Although I could care less about that) and I am having a problem viewing DVD's.

I have a Sony DVD player set to 16:9 aspect that has worked even up to this morning. The new Vizio TV arrived and now I can't watch a DVD on a full screen.

The vizio settings under wide is set to Normal. When I play a movie, there is a black bar on the sides of the tv cutting it by a third.

The only other settings under wide would be zoom, zoom2 and panoramic. All of those options fill in the screen, but stretch the picture.

On my previous Samsung 46 and Sony 42 LED and LCD tv, there was no need to distort the picture. The wide setting was set to normal and when the DVD was playing, the picture would take up the entire tv.

Is there something I am doing wrong, or is it the tv. I have tried other DVD's getting the same result. Also when I start the DVD player in the past, the start up screen would encorporate the entire tv. That is even cut by the black bars.

Don't know if I am explaining this accurately, but would appreciate any help.

OK, I have downloaded your manual. No TV has a perfect solution for your problem. All forms of wide modes 4:3 aspect ratio material will cause some distortion on all modes that fill a wide screen TV. I guess you did not notice on your last TV.

For your TV when viewing the above material you need to be on the zoom 1 setting. This will give you the best performance watching full screen DVDs.

If you don't like it try another TV, but that setting will give you the best performance on your TV. Or you can watch with lines at the side, like a lot of people choose to do.

Thank you so much for the response. I will try the Zoom 1 and see if it is as good as my Samsung was. I probably never noticed it due to the fact that it adjusted it automatically.

If it continues to bother me, I guess I'll just go pick up another tv.

Another question would be is it my older model Home Theater System. I was going to purchase a new one for the basement I just finished. This could be a good excuse to upgrade this 7 year old version.

Thanks again.

A lot has happened in the last 7 years, so likely you would benefit from an upgrade. I have no idea what you have, what your expectations are, let alone your budget, so I can't be explicit.

Are your DVD's 4:3 aspect ratio DVDs? I have a Vizio and I have a few older 4:3 aspect ratio DVDs and I just live with the black bars. Try looking at your DVD player menu to see what can be done there? Zoom will work as TLS indicated.

They are all brand new DVD's. New there was going to be a problem here when I powered up the DVD player and the DVD symbol didn't take up the whole screen. On my other two tv's the Dream player would automatically fill the screen. It's a shame because the picture is fantastic

Don't know if I just got a bad tv because the wireless internet doesn't work either. It pics up my router for about two minutes and then drops it. It also will not accept my router's password.

I tried the zoom, It looked good. I have 90 days to bring it back, I didn't want to borrow my neighbors pick-up.

Thanks for the help.

Whether they are brand new is irrelevant. Are they full screen or 16:9

That's the problem there is no wide selection. Just zoom normal or panoramic.

Thank you for the help. I decided not to wait 90 days and brought it back today and picked up a Samsung 55 inch. Same movies play on the tv with no bars on the left and right side of the screen.
