Shot a gun for the first time today :)

Went clay pigeon shooting this morning with some friends - probably not the best thing to start with for a beginner, but we had a good time.

Started with a 12ga then dropped to a 20ga because my shoulder was killing me. I was constantly told to hold the shotgun tighter against my shoulder, but I was holding it pretty firmly.

Only hit 21 targets out of 88 shots, though :(

Here's how my shoulder looks now:

You should raise your centre speaker....oh, sorry....that's not the subject of your post.

Yeah, shooting can be fun. Hope you wore hearing protection....;)

Wow! looks like the gun owned you, that is very sore looking.
sounds like you had a "blast" , so looking back is it something you would like to do more often or maybe not so much ?
I really think one must truly devote time to gunnining and it is very easy to lose interest.

Warp, that sort of makes me feel better but I could also take it as if you're saying I've got the arms of a 12 year old :D

Yes, first time shooting and I've lived in texas for almost ten years now. Just never really thought about going before.

I actually really want to buy a new tv stand that has a mount for the display so I can put my center on the top shelf (and have more room for crap on the bottom two shelves). It's not too bad right now because my viewing position is my bed which is not much higher than where the center is, though. I most certainly had hearing protection on our little adventure as well.

Yeah sawz, we had a great time. We definitely want to do it again - I'll just get one of those padded shooting shirts for the next time we to shotgun stuff. I'd like to try shooting pistols and rifles at a regular range too.

Well now you have Alex interested.
I'm just say'in
Good, someone to take the interest off of me :p

But I'm too old for Alex now, I turned 21 last week :D

Going to the range is a lot of fun, I go with my roommates pretty frequently. At least you hit a few clays, I've seen people hit none

You guys are a riot but I am actually gonna ask an on topic question ... no, really.

What's considered like a normal/average number of shots to take while you're out doing that?

Philip, those two hickey looking bruises are different but the wide spread red rash isn't anything you're likely to feel. I get something like that on my shoulder from either hauling my tool bag on and off jobs or when I carry material around. Nice wife beater BTW. :p

dkane, in our group of 4, there were 3 first timers. I did the worst, but was pretty close to the guy who beat me. The overall winner hit about 50% and he was another first timer :( If I didn't hit anything I probably wouldn't want to go back lol

Alex, the place we went offered 50 or 100 shots per person, so I'd guess 50 or 100 is average :D We would have done the whole hundred except we didn't bring enough shells.

I remember shooting for the first time at my grandpa's farm many years ago. I hit the very first one and then missed the next nine. Never tried it again.

I don't think that's the case. I'm not a member but I can see the image.
I have no clue what the issue could be.

i can see the rehosted image now, ouch indeed, if only i had an open space here in the city to do that kind of shooting. maybe rats let loose in a shooting range would be a good equivalent. :D

I always slip a 3 1/2" turkey load in for the first shot for newbs. :D

Everyone always goes home bruised the first time. Yours wasn't actually that bad. My first time I had the gun resting practically on my arm pit and it left a hugantic bruise.

You should have held it tighter to your shoulder.;)

The first time my dad took me shooting I was 5 years old. He didn't give me any instructions beyond point and shoot. That thing knocked me on my a$$ in a hurry. Dad laughed his butt off. Oh the memories.

For your question on shots per outing, three of us will shoot 500-800 rounds. Depending on the weather and how the clays are flying. Glad you had a good time. Make sure your shooting skeet loads that your "buddies" are giving you. Sometimes we will give the new guy magnum geese loads just to punch him a few times.
