Socialist audiophiles?

The two terms socialist and audiophile seem to be quite incompatible in their beliefs, generally speaking. Socialists wanting things handed to them, and audiophiles spending crazy amounts of money for top of the line stuff. None the less, I was wondering, how many socialist audiophiles do we have here at Audioholics?

All I want is a "yes I am both" or a "no I'm just an audiophile", I'm NOT looking for opinions on whether or not socialism is correct! This isn't meant to be political! I was just curious. I honestly believe there isn't a socialist audiophile in existence, but if I already knew that as a certain fact I wouldn't be asking. :)

Edit: To make it more interesting, what are you, if not socialist?

I try not to be an Audiophool, but I'm certainly an audio enthusiast.

As far as socialists, I hate them and agree with Margaret Thatcher, that "Socialists should be swatted like flies."

Hmmmm political post in disguise? I wonder how long it will last...;)

I really doubt you will find anyone that fits your overly simplistic definition of Socialist here.

Politically I consider myself a left leaning moderate. I like certain aspects of liberal and conservative forms of government. I hate extremes of both and believe all of our major political parties need to compromise and do what is right for the country instead of just following party lines.

Audiophile? Hardly, thirty years ago maybe, I still like to listen to music but find the older I get the less time I have to sit down and enjoy listening. In fact I can't really remember the last time I sat down and just listened to music, there is always something else going on...

This is what you call a disguise?

Would you be considered socialist if you want to give instead of take?

Is it too late to turn Jersey into a territory?

Margret Thatcher ... ugh. :p

You just gotta know Matt's still sleeping. :)

I used over simplistic terms purposefully to avid making this seem too "political" in nature. ;) I guess you can define socialist and/or audiophile however you want, but I was generally looking for the contrast of audiophiles/enthusiasts only willing to purchase the best vs people wanting free things. I guess I have to factor in my own preconception that free things are never as good as things you actually have to pay good money for. Still though, I've never known this to be any other way in reality.

Truth be known, I disagree with socialism. I'd much rather pay for a good quality product out of a wide selection than have something handed to me (that I probably won't like-- in the case of audio)

So far my hypothesis holds true. There doesn't seem to be any socialists here...

(And yeah, I agree with you 10010011. Extremes are bad. (And more time to you, friend! ))

I guess if you're the government... You giving stuff away? haha

I don't have any strong disposition. I believe in Equal Opportunity, but not Equal Outcome because as an individual I am personally very competitive and ambitious... Am I socialist? No. I think in this world people who find themselves anywhere far from moderation on the spectrum, end up meeting thier downfall. The world is about balance. So I believe in both being freely ostentatious but also being a philanthropist.

I guess I'm a pragmatist. I'll go with whatever works best in any particular circumstance. I think that has been well-established that any "ism" practiced without any offset by other "isms' does not work.

"With Capitalism, man oppresses man. With Communism, it's the exact opposite". :D

Can't remember who said that first, but it's a gem.;)

And yes, I expect the hammer to come down on this thread, at some point. IBTL!

See, this is why I love you group of guys (and audiophiles/enthusiasts in general). You're all very intelligent and rational thinkers. We should hang out more often.

It saddens me that I'm the only audiophile I know IRL.

Since this thread is doomed anyway can we make it a Christian government redistributing Davemcc's wealth? :D
It's already happening. It's been happening for years but thanks for the acknowledgement.:D

I just lost it reading that. :D
Between the audio stuff and occasional hilarity here it's no wonder I'm here so much. :)

You could always go to Yemen and have a government with a different religion redistribute your wealth and probably some of your body parts but I think you should stay where you are. ;)

OP,

Of course there are socialist audiophiles. Government is for the masses. Music is for me. How I would that you were ruled has no bearing on what it is that I want to possess.

I'm just glad so many of the posters in this thread are smart enough to realize that such a overly simple view of such a complex theory is ridiculous.

We should turn this into a spank the monkey thread now, much more fun.

I believe in a "safety net," including social security and universal health care. However, I detest people who lay back and let government and others take care of them, just as I loathe those in industries like the stock market, investment banking, and energy, who lobby government to favor them with protection, then gamble on obscenely huge profits, knowing they will be protected from their own folly if they fail.

As was said, socialism is just too broad a word to be useful in any serious discussion. I would say though, that a communist audio system would be a public address system, since communists do not believe in private property. If there is to be a fascist audio system, I will nominate the Rockport Arrakis; a muscular aesthetic almost to the point of malevolence, a price tag that ensures only aristocracy could ever enjoy them, a triumph of elitism over reason and rationality if there ever was one. Just look at these things, they would be right at home in the Reich Chancellery:

Runner up for a fascist speaker system goes to Wilson Alexandrias, for all the same reasons.

I'm not a socialist audiophile, but I would like to be.

Sure, just give me lots of high end A/V gear. I'm even willing to share the experience with others!

As others have said, it's all about balance. Communism, socialism, capitalism, ism, ism, ism... It all needs some balance and not a one of them is entire bad, or entirely good no matter what Rush wants you to believe. Kind of like religion right? ;)
