Good bass for your buck sub ?

I recently picked up a large mitsu rear projector, anyhow I am less than thrilled with the audio. I had an extra Energy 8" ported sub hooked to It and it improved the sound greatly. Unfortunately that sub was part of a sub/satellite combo that I have since sold.

I am on the hunt for a new or used sub to hook only to the tv. My budget is under $100 due to the fact that I am currently saving pennies for a SVS sub for the theater. But I desperately need something sooner than later to use on a everyday basis.

If anyone has suggestions I would love to hear them.

I notice Best Buy sells a Sony ported 10" 100W for $99 (saw2500) I am a bit apprehensive thou.

with these speaker "SVS 5.0 w/STS-02's"
any of the mentioned subs would be shame to match.
How large is your living room/ht room ? is it open for other rooms?

$100 is not budget for decent sub, maybe DIY but even then I doubt that

BSA, his $100 sub option is going to be used in conjunction with the TV speakers only, not his SVS speakers :)

$100 is definitely NOT my budget for a theater sub.... I am currently saving/waiting to get a SVS PB12 or better...

I am just looking for something cheap to utilize the sub out on my Mitsu to "enhance" the sound... without a sub it is very bright with ZERO low end...

Oh, Ok sorry missed that part

I guess the good old Dayton should do the trick
http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=300-635

Or go DIY route for truly best bang for a buck:
Like this project:
http://diyaudioprojects.com/Speakers/MAW-10/MAW-10.htm
and here:
http://diyaudioprojects.com/Gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-22

Or cook something really custom with
Dayton Audio SD270A-88 and SA70
http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=295-486
http://www.parts-express.com//pe/pshowdetl.cfm?Partnumber=300-784&AID=1457483&PID=2558074

Now , I don't know jack crap about designing a sub, but my gut feeling tells me these two and some smartly designed (ported?) box could be fine together...

btw: someone already build box for SD270A-88 and sells it with driver:

I plan on doing the same thing when I upgrade to a flat panel HDTV. My old sony RPTV has descent sound to it but I will be looking for a cheap small sub for TV watching. Does you TV have a "Sub Out" or will you be hooking it up a different way?

I bought that Dayton for my son and I was surprised how good it sounds. I expected a little fart box, but I was wrong.
The Dayton imo is at the high end of my budget..

The mitsu has a sub out

I went to HH Greg tonight and picked up a Sony SAW2500 10" ported sub, It is 100W peak 50W normal. i got it for $93...

It sounds pretty good... I started looking around online, at Amazon they have Polk PSW10 for $99 and free shipping...

I am seriously considering returning the Sony and buying the Polk..

The Sony is nice, but it is more like a sub you would get with one of those monster shelf stereo systems... its cheaply made, the amp is also just as cheap looking; its this huge plastic block on the rear of the wood box with plastic knobs for "Freq Cut Off" and "Level"

the Polk looks more like a true home theater sub, with a flush mounted plate amp, it is even available in a cherry finish...

I have 14 days to return the Sony... Ill let it ride for a few days and make up my mind...

Ive tweaked the level and cut off on the "little Sony that could" and it sounds pretty darn good...

Defiantly wont be breaking any SPL records... but it is PERFECT for what i wanted...

Something must be wrong with your setup....

The STS-02 speakers really should not sound bright or lacking low end based on this:

http://www.svsound.com/vault/STS-02/Specifications/STS-02_Specs_Binder2.pdf

While there is a shallow rolloff below 100hz it's smooth and nothing that should be "bothering" you.

I think what's likely happening is either a room suck-out or inadequate BSC. Try using the receiver's EQ and adding about 3db below 500hz or so all the way down to 60hz. see if that does anything interesting.

The OP is using the sony sub with his TV's built in speakers. He plans on buying an SVS sub to match with his STS-02s later. I plan on doing the same thing as I don't away want to always power up my Mains/Subs to watch TV but at the same time want a fuller sound with regular TV watching

Ive seen & heard that Sony...RETURN THAT JUNK!! Honestly you can do so much better man!!!

Spend $99 on an 8" sub & youll get better blending with the RPTV & get a better quality sub by going a little smaller..

You are right, but the brick and mortars don't carry much under 10"

To be honest, I regret selling my Energy ES-8 sub...

The dayton Sub-80 is backordered until May...

It sad that BestBuy charges $300 plus for a decent 8" sub...
