Protect Mode

Recently my Marantz SR6001 receiver has been going in to protect mode randomly. I am not really sure what would be causing this behavior in my receiver and was wondering if you guys would have some suggestions.

It has happened three times now, all rather randomly and soon after I had turned the receiver on. Normally I would be playing PS3 and would have had the receiver on for about less than a few minutes and the receiver would go in to protect mode. I checked to make sure that my speakers were wired correctly every time and made sure that none of the wires were touching. After I have let the receiver sit unplugged for about a day it seems to come back to full life. The last time it happened it was about an hour ago. Before that, a little less than a week ago. Before that it was about a month ago. It is these reoccurring instances that is starting to make me worry and the fact that when it has happened I never have had my volume level over -35.
I have not checked the wiring in the back of my receiver, that will be a big pain to do and I would rather not do that unless I really have to. However, I found something interesting this last time it went in to protect mode. I unplugged the power and then plugged the receiver back in. I figured that the only reason that it would be having this problem is because of some weird problem with my speakers or the wiring. So I plugged it back in about 15 minutes later and just let it sit while turned on with nothing been sent to or played by the receiver. It stayed on for about 1 minute and then it went in to protect mode again.

I am at a loss, any ideas? I am beginning to think this might be a problem with my receiver.

Yes, you do have to check the wiring on the back of the receiver and pronto.

Whatever the cause, a receiver can only go into protect mode a limited number of times before blowing up.

Redo the speaker wiring carefully and make sure there are no whiskers. It only takes one to cause this and ruin your receiver. Check it before you switch it on again.

If after checking the wiring it still persists, then your receiver has a major fault and needs service.

Although I too, would lean towards a short or malfunction, another possibility is ventilation. Have you moved the the receiver to a poorly ventilated area? Have you placed something on top, like a book, or another heat generating device?

Its not likely a ventilation issue, as it occurs soon after switch on.

It's a simple check and rules out another variable.

Sounds like the area behind the receiver is crowded- if it is, it's possible that a speaker wire is being pushed/pulled by another cable and it could have caused a few strands of wire to come in contact with something that's grounded.

If the shelves don't have a wide gap for cables and they're all bunched up back there, and I know it's a PITA to deal with them back there, it needs to be addressed before you launch the receiver.

Do you have a cat or small dog? They like chewing on wires.

This sounds like a speaker wire issue. Check the speaker wire for whiskers. Also if your speaker wire is exposed and have pets or if the wire is placed underneath anything heavy, check the wire for any nicks or chew marks.

When checking the speaker wires for shorts, besides checking the back of the AVR be sure to check @ each speaker as well. Todays multi-channel AVRs are every sensitive to any short even a single small wire strand.

Well, my school just canceled all classes tomorrow due to the weather, so seems like a good a day as ever to do it. I just bought some banana plugs so I will outfit my wires with them as well.

Ok, I pulled out the receiver and rewired everything with banana plugs. I double checked all the speakers too and made sure that there was a clean connection and fixed up a few of them. I tired turning it on and initially there doesn't seem to be any problems, but I have yet to play any audio out of it.

My old Marantz sr5000 did this along with killing one of my b&w 302's in my bedroom. Checked the wiring it was good, Receiver shorted out, poor 302, it was my first set of b&w's, Found the speaker quite far away from its normal location with the back post cracked off. No bueno

Ouch! As owner of two SR6001s, I'm not happy to hear that!

Depending on what your current speakers are, you may want to switch to some other speakers while you are testing things out. I know I can pick up a pair of older speakers I could live with off Craigs list for $50 in my area, or some kind of crappy ones for $10-15 from Goodwill.
But it sounds like if your last effort to eliminate shorts doesn't work, you'll need to get it serviced.

Ok, so my receiver is back at it again. It has gone nearly a month without doing anything and all of a sudden today it is going back in to protect mode. I have watched a couple movies, watched TV, and played plenty of hours of video games on it and I have experienced no problems what so ever. I made sure that all of the wires are not touching. But today I turned it on to play some PS3 and after being on for a about 30 seconds it went into protect. I unplugged it for about a half an hour, plugged it back in, protect. Changed the outlet it was in and I was able to play much for a while. I stopped, turned off the receiver and took a shower, went to turn it back on and it went in to protect again. I changed the outlet again and it had been on playing music for the past 15 minutes or so. I am at a loss.

Any suggestions?

Your receiver needs service most likely. Some component is drawing too much current I fear.

Do a reset to factory default if you have not already.

I downloaded the manual and the manual is silent on this receiver's ability to handle a 4 ohm load. In the manual it specifies 100 watt into 8 ohm and 120 watt into 6 ohm, but is silent about 4 ohm.

What speakers are you using? You must remember a speaker's nominal impedance given by the manufacturer, means just about nothing. Even then the phase curve is never given and if the phase angles are negative the amplifier will see a load even lower than the measured impedance.

So it is a bad idea to purchase equipment that does not have a four ohm specification, as premature failure driving a lot of speakers, even 8 ohm nominal ones is likely.

The age of that receiver makes the decision for repair problematic.

On monday or tuesday I am going to try and give marantz a call and see if they have any suggestions. Hopefully things will go smoothly...if I have to get this fixed, this will be the forth piece of electronics that has broken on me this year, and it's not even march >.<

In that case you likely have inadequate power protection. The two commonest causes of electronic failure.

1). User stupidity.

2). Poor power from the grid. This latter is deteriorating. The grid has been stressed due to the very cold weather. Modern electronics is very sensitive to power problems. A surge protector is not close to adequate.

Your next purchase needs to be a smart UPS if you don't have one, and whole house surge protection.

No, this is the only thing that broke that was plugged up. I have had my electric shaver die randomly, my phone (which I was expecting, but that doesn't make it better), and the the electronic focus component in one of my camera lenses from my camera bag dropping...just some shitty luck on my part, sadly.

It tricks the Receiver into thinking it's over heating.

Grant you I bought mine Refurbished from accessories4less.com. It took them 2 tries to figure it was the temp. sensor.

You didn't happen to get info on how to tell which temp sensors were bad did you- batch numbers, etc?

When you say it took two tries to figure it was the temp sensor, who was diagnosing the receiver? Was this through A4L?

Thanks you so much for letting me know about this, it really made me feel a lot better knowing that my unit isn't actually being damaged. I will see if I can contact Marantz and ask if do anything for me.
