You can cut that budget in half if you wanted and play most games maxed out at 1080p resolutions if you wanted to save some money. I can put a built list together if you want and have everyone second guess every part that I choose (because I know you douchebags better than that).

I'm trying to hold out for the sandy bridge processors. I do like the current i7's...I really want a computer that will kick some a$$ for quite some time. Is it possible with a 1k budget?

If you are holding out for Sandy Bridge, then hold out for Buldozer. Sandy Bridge is an unnoticeable increase in performance over the current i7's. Buldozer (AMD) on the other hand is supposed to wipe the floor with any offering from Intel when it comes out. I would sit tight and see what the underdogs bring to the table.

Sounds like both of them will be released in April. It will be interesting to see. Hopefully this comp will last that long. So far so good with Win 7.

Uh... AMD hasn't been competitive since the Core2Duo dropped. By what basis do you think AMD is going to pull a rabbit out of their hat this round? There isn't a single credible shred of evidence that Bulldozer is going to even be competitive with the last gen i7.

If AMD had a monster they'd be busy leaking benchmarks to generate interest and get people to wait for Bulldozer.

Unfortunately for AMD, I hearly agree 100% with above.
They there the first to do x86-64, first to introduce dual core on desktops (x2-3800 - which I still rock at home ), first to include memory controller on die and lastly first (at least in design) to include GPU in same die.

I don't know what happen to the AMD innovation genius , but they must pull the rabbit out of hat soon, since even now same priced processor at my price point - $200 - Intel cpu basically kills AMD's at everything, save for couple heavy multi-tasked specialized apps (rare and few).

Sweet! Once they are out, you guys have to help me build my own system ....I hear that the Big Strong Sandy Bridge processors aren't coming out until late in 2011??? If thats the case, what do you guys think of the Intel® - Core™ i7-980X 3.33GHz Processor? I hear the 1st gen SB can't compete.

Unless you're made of money I have no idea why you'd by a $1k Core i7-980X over a $280 Core i7-2600K. Sure, it's got 2 more cores, but you'll have more overclocking headroom on the 2600K. Very few applications will run faster on the 980X by the time you've pushed each to the limit.

Hearly disagree - SB offers nice 10-15% boost in single thread apps, especially noticeable in i5 series. In same price (about $200) point Current AMD X6 lags behind current i5-760 in all apps, except specialized multi-threaded - mostly CAD stuff, while consuming considerably more power. I <3 AMD, but they are lagging behind now and I doubt Buldozer will even catch up to SB, not to mention bypass it. AMD could sell it cheaper thou...

Deprication on computers is extremely high. My advisement is buy what meets your requirements. AMD and Intel don't have that huge of a difference IMO. I'd go with which is cheaper and meets your application requirements.
