I currently own a Fat 80gb ps3 with the 2 usb outs. I am upgrading my Receiver from the vsx 91 to SC-37. I am now contemplating upgrading my ps3 to a standalone blu-ray player, But I dont have 500 dollars for an OPPO. Is it worth upgrading (if its an even a upgrade) pioneer elite bdp-33? Any suggestions or should I just continue to use my ps3. The rest of my setup is posted below. Thanks guys!

do you still game? Is there something ur not happy with the ps3? Reason i say this is that i contemplated the same thing. Actually planned to move the ps3 and get a stand alone like the oppo.Especially since the oppo is a universal as well and i could get rid of my present universal(lexicon). But at the end i just stayed with the ps3 as it does what its supposed to do and is a very fine player. The oppo may be an upgrade but dont know about the pioneer bdp you suggested. If they are lateral moves i would stay with the ps3 as it does so many things. My .02

Stick with the PS 3. Unless you're willing to shell out the money for an Oppo, there isn't much out there that is better than the trusty 'ol fat PS 3. Especially since the fattie does DVD-A and SACD which not many other players do.

Just so we are clear, no Sony products can play the MLP hirez tracks on DVD-A discs since it was a competing format to SACD.

So lets say I did scrap up the 500 bucks for an OPPO 93, Is the picture and sound quality really worth the upgrade? The networking features, my ps3 already has so I am not really worried about that to much. Just more the sound and picture quality. As far as keeping the ps3, yes I am keeping it, but only to play Call of duty

In terms of PQ(picture quality) Blu-ray is a Blu-ray you won' notice a difference now if it's PQ of a DVD that's when there's a difference how well is the PQ on the PS3 vs Oppo J is more qualified to answer that question since he owns both. In terms of audio quality I doubt there's a difference unless your using the analog outputs on the Oppo then this would be a point in their favor.

IMO if you want a stand-alone BDP just to cut down on the wear and tear of the PS3, also a lower power consumption vs the PS3 then I would suggest looking in the Panny models which would cost less than the Oppo and offer many features which are the standard among most models. Here is one I have been looking into for myself the Panasonic DMP-BD85 has pretty much everything except the ability to play DVD audio or SACD.

Only the first generation of PS3 plays SACD. I think it depends on why you need to upgrade. If it is for sound and picture quality then I don't think it is worth spending 500 on the 93. That being said I will likely be pulling the trigger on the 95, but for slightly different reasons. As I expressed my opinion many times, the talks about upscaling are over exaggerated. To my, and other family members eyes the PS3 plays DVDs as good as my other standalone players that are outfitted with ABT, Reon, and proprietary VPs. I have been told by forum members that on a large screen (>60" I assume), the difference would be visible. I really doubt it. To me if I have a big screen like that I would stick to HD. I have absolutely no doubt that the quality of the DVD itself has much more influence on the final PQ than the quality/performance of the VP.

Now I am referring to the VPs in mid range up to date BDPs. I am not talking about those <79.99 upscaling DVD players. Yes the Oppo will get you better DVD PQ than those Walmart upscaling players.

For low cost standalong players, there are good deals on the Sony 470 as long as you can live without the 7.1 analog outs. Those late Sony models can also play SACD. That's one reason why I prefer them to the Panny models. The other reason is just price, comparable Panny models cost much more, in Canada anyway but may not be the case in the US.

As Peng mentioned, I don't think you will notice any difference in PQ on a typical TV, certainly not with BD. The PS3 upscales great - not at the same level of my 83, but it does well enough that I don't think anyone would complain. The main reason why you would want an Oppo over the PS3 is for better analog audio. If you are going to do HDMI audio, there won't be a difference.

The original 60G does SACD, as well as the first 80G model, and possibly one of the 40G models of the same age, but none of the others do.

Almost right: the first two generations of PS3.

Closer -- the original 20GB and 60GB plus the 2007 80GB i.e. the one with 4 USB ports, and none of the 40, 160, 250 or 320GB models. Also not the 2008 80GB model with 2 ports that the OP has.

And no, proper DVD-A playback isn't supported by any, even though technically they should be able to.

For more details, see the PS3 SACD FAQ.

It was the 20G I was thinking of. I always forget about that one because I only ever knew one person who owned one.

You got me beat I never knew of any, finding a 20Gb owner is like finding Bigfoot, two snowflakes that are the same and the Ark of the Covenant all at the same time.

LOL Bifgoot sitting on the Ark holding two identical snowflakes in the Holy Grail.

A buddy of mine didn't have the extra cash and thought he wouldn't use the built in Wifi, so he got the 20G. I wanted the Wifi and other extra features.

The 20Gb didn't sell as well as the 60Gb since:

1) Lack of built in WiFi

2) Size of HDD

So now you can find 20Gb PS3 with that New Factory smell which is a rarity among game consoles, also it's biggest draw.....wait for it.......it uses the EE chip for PS2 game compatibility. Only two models had the EE chip the 60GB with prefix CECHA and the 20Gb prefix CECHB. I mean don't get me wrong you can find a 60Gb refurb for $300 with the EE chip but that's sometimes a crapshoot that it will work flawlessly. Just one more tidbit, the 20Gb was only available six months before Sony pulled the plug due to the demand for the 60Gb which was like 10 to 1.

For your HD-DVD you'll get $25 at the pawnshop:eek::D
