Having problems with Yamaha HTR-5940 receiver

This is an older receiver. I know I need to update it, but we can't afford it. Anyway, I'm not getting any sound out of it. I ran the speaker test through it, and all the speaks work. On the front display it only shows 2.1, and I'm running 5.1. I'm running digital coax from the receiver to the dvd player. (there is no hdmi). I've looked all through the manual for different connections, still nothing. I did a reset on it, still nothing. I've gotten online for different wiring connections. Nothing has worked. I don't know what to do. If anyone knows anything about this receiver please get back to me. Thanks.

Is this the first time you're setting it up? In other words, was it working and then stopped? If so, did you change anything?

While the DVD is playing, have you tried changing input modes on the front through the selector button? Could be you have the receiver set to the wrong input.

Also, you could test it with some RCA cables to see if you have a bad coax cable.

Last resort, call Yamaha (the wait can be brutal but sometimes it provides insight).

No, this is not the first time it's been hooked up. I mounted the Klipsch quintet speakers on the ceiling, and ran all the wires through the attic, and down the wall to a speaker wall plate. It was working great, but after all that nothing worked. yes, I tried different imputs while a dvd was playing. Still nothing. The manual says to put the imput on auto, I tried that, still nothing. Rca cables ? As in component video? I did try that. Nothing. Thanks for the imput. If you can think of anything else for me to try please do so. Thanks again.

I just looked on Yamaha's site, but I could not find a phone number to call. I looked on their united states site, not global. Where would I find it ?

Perhaps one of the experts here can weigh in, but it's tough for me to troubleshoot without "hands and eyes on". If you've got an HT inclinded buddy, sometimes a second set of eyes can really help.

Sorry it's giving you fits!

One last thing, found this:

"Solved problem with Yamaha HTR-6040 AV Receiver. My daughter had inadvertently changed the program to "Direct Stereo" mode which allows sources to bypass the decoders and DSP processors so you can listen to 2-Channel PCM and Analog sources. Nothing to decode digital audio in this setting! "

Is it in direct stereo mode?

I looked at the help section - I think the last time I asked them something I sent an e-mail (didn't see a phone number either). I'd e-mail them and ask for a number.

Seriously, I have no life.

You will need to trouble shoot this logically.

The speakers and amps work as you can hear the test tones. Your problem is before the power amp stage.

First see if you can get sound from the radio. Answer no = major problem.

Yes, go to page 37 of your manual.

Connect your DVD player or CD player to the analog inputs. Select Analog on the input set up, in case you have a processor problem.

If you hear sound, then switch to auto or DTS and see if you hear sound via the digital connection. If no the DAC is shot.

If you hear no sound from the analog inputs, connect your player to the left and right multi channel inputs. No sound, the pre amp section of your receiver is down. If you hear sound then the switching section of your receiver is down.

Now I'm pretty sure it was this receiver we had a post about before with this problem. The problem was the headphone detection circuit. Is your receiver showing a headphone connection when there isn't one? If so that is your problem.

Unfortunately the problem with these receivers is not the jack but the detection/switching circuit. This requires the replacement of an expensive board and is not cost effective.

If these tests above indicate a major problem, I would not invest in repair, but save for a new receiver. For a receiver of that quality it has basically used its expected life span, and its time to recycle it.

Sorry for the delay in response. I've been working graveyard. I will try everything you have suggested when I can. Thanks for the help.

I have another question

Well, I ended up upgrading the reciever to the Denon AVR-591. It has all the updated connections. Anyway it works now, but I have another question. I'm not sure if this is the place to ask it, but here it goes. I have a logitech remote, and my old receiver had a power plug in the back so when I hit watch dvd all the components came on. This receiver does not have this. What can I install to plug the receiver, sub, and dvd playing in so when I hit watch dvd everything comes on? Thanks for all the help I've gotten so far

What logitech remote do you have? If it is a harmony you should be able to program activities to do exactly what you want.

It's the older 550. I can turn each component on seperatly, but that's not what I want. When I hit watch dvd, I want all the components to turn on. Like I said, I had everything plugged into the components. For example, when I turned the receiver on, the dvd player, and the sub came on

The 550 if programmed correctly will turn on all your gear. Doing what you were by using the switched outlets on the back of the receiver is not really a good idea. Your receiver is not a powerstrip. Your sub probably has a auto-on function and if you program your remote it will turn on the receiver, tv, dvd player and switch to the correct inputs.

ok, you were right. I programed the remote to turn the dvd on/off, and my sub does have an auto. What does this do? When switched to auto it still does not come on just short of turning it on manually?

The Auto-on switch setting will turn the sub on when it received a signal from the receiver and will turn off after a period of time with no signal. This time varies by company. With most it is around 5 minutes.

oh, ok. I didn't wait long enough. Ok. I have to go to work now. Thanks for all your help.

... using the switched outlets on the back of the receiver is not really a good idea.
Especially if it's to run a sub. There will be a rating on those switched and unswitched outlets on the back of a rec'r that are by far exceeded by I would think pretty much any sub.

I do use my outlets to power up a DVD player and a phonograph.
I didn't check the spec's but I figure I'm good ... right? :D
