That Toshiba tablet looks nice, but I noticed some glaring omissions from the demo site - namely battery life and built-in storage capacity. Maybe I'm just a stickler for those things - but when they weren't prominently displayed (in fact I couldn't find them anywhere on the site at all) my "conspiracy theorist" brain starts going full tilt.

Maybe it just wasn't finalized, maybe they aren't finished testing - or maybe both really suck - like 8GB and 3hrs or something along those lines. :)
Maybe but 'least Toshiba's battery is user replaceable :D

Mini Review Part 2:
Multi-touch is still lacking in lots of apps as well as copy & paste.
Built-in exchange app doesn't sync contacts & Calendar, but you got get Touchdown for that.
Some hacks required to disable default on cell radio service, which does consume tons of battery.
I wish someone will make good ROM for Nook Color since hardware is very promising, unfortunately only one dedicated button makes things a bit "un-anderoidy"....

ViewSonic has similar tablet with dual core Tegra CPU for $380... Stock ROM seems to suffer from poor performance, however there are several alternative ROMs avaiable for it. It also more hunkier than Nook - something to consider if you still intend to use it for reading books :)

Said that - $250 is still heck of deal for that, but I'm afraid it's still not ready for none-technical person.
Does tricking out the Nook like you did void the warranty?

nook-devs claim what root is easily undone and if device is fully reset to factory state, technically no one will be the wiser to detect any device tampering to consider refusal of warranty service.

Small update re: Looks like I'm not the only person whom wishes for better Nook Color Rom - CyanogenMod devs already working on such ...

One of my co-workers was thinking of getting a Velocity Cruz because it is on sale for $99, but his brother who is a "techie" told him to get the Nook Color. I am thinking of going this route as well since you also recommend the Nook. I looked at the nookDev website and honestly the process seems a little complicated. Plus I don't even know what things like "enabling soft keys" or setting up the "default launcher" even mean.

So I am wondering if doing this is worth it for me? I don't even know if I would use the features that rooting the Nook gives you. About all I would be using it for is reading books, surfing the web and installing some apps like Angry Birds. :D

The Nook Color definitely seems cool, I just don't know if the root process is going to be worth the trouble to me.

Nook Color got few things going for it : It's thin and light, it has more than decent battery; Bright Screen and responsive and precise touchscreen.

However, while Auto-Nooter process itself is pretty easy actually, fiddling with Nook after wards to customize it - pretty annoying even for a techie like me...
What why I said before - If I wanted to get the nook - I'd wait till there will be dedicated alternative ROM like CyanogenMod - http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/11127-nook-color/
http://www.absolutelyandroid.com/members-of-xda-developers-raises-over-1300-to-fund-cyanogenmod-for-nook-developement/

From store Nook is pretty limited - You can read books (pretty limited by B&N or local stored - format support very limited) and browse internet.
No email, no Angry birds and no Google market.
Root process gives all that plus more, it's just not very polished out yet...

I've read that B&N does automatic updates on the Nook. Does this wipe out the root? If so, can you block the automatic updates?

No auto-updates while rooted - that goes for any android device.

CyanogenMod finally has nightly builds for Nook Color. It the best ROM for nook so far, thou Video acceleration still not working, the dedicated onscreen buttons help a lot. It's basically makes NC to 99.99% Android (2.3 - GingerBread) tablet

Will keep you on the process

I guess that's good news??

Sorry, but most of what that link said just went right over my head. How long will it be until someone comes out with a one step root process like Jailbreak?

Yes, this is very good news as this process results in very functional and easy to use android tablet. Yes, the process is not very easy and honestly some steps I don't really understand ether - just like food recipe - trying to follow it to the letter usually works.

The process is VERY different from jailbreak, Jailbreak process is equivalent to rooting the android phone, however CM ROM is changing entire Operating system to a different one. Somewhat like Jailbreaking is finally getting local admin and ability to install any app to changing windows xp to windows 7 :D

Flashed the CM nightly V6 a few minutes ago....I just picked up my NC for $200. :)

V6 has some issues....flashing V5 as we speak. Planning to use this for my Android Automation Project Remote. :)

Yes rooting=granting local account SU permissions (root perms)

The Nook Color Cyanogenmod process is actually casting an image overwriting the default onboard image. Which is awesome because you start with a fresh unbloated image.

Is it sluggish? How is it handling android? I am messing around with a rooted galaxy and its sluggish at time..... clearly needs more firepower!

Not sluggish in the least. Sounds like you need to ditch your stock image and grab some custom rom lovin.

Guess I shouldn't attempt this as everything you just said means nothing to me. Bummer.

darien87, JailBreaking or Root is equal to force opening the car, which you "lost" the keys for.
Changing (or Burning) ROM is akin to change entire car's interior, transmission, engine and parts of exterior as well.
I hope you understand this analogy ;)

@krzywica
Yea, CM7 nightly 6 came out very broken. nightly 5 is great.
Performance Tweaks:
Kernel Overclock 1100Mhz - Needs be burned from ClockWork Recovery AND enabled in CM performance settings.
I also added compcache at 10% and Lock Home in memory.
These tweaks seem to help with default AWL launcher. I know it wasn't sluggish before, but it's even faster now

Well the ipad lasted until last month before I sold it. Dang thing would not stay connected to the internet for more than 15 minutes at a time. Today I just picked up a samsung galaxy tab 10.1. Hopefully this one serves me better.
