JBL Synthesis 1400 Array BG

I heard these at the CES show a few days ago and I was absolutely blown away by how REAL they sound. I am an old IMF/Quad/Spendor/Sonus Faber and even vintage ADS fan who has always looked down his nose at JBLs, but somehow I found myself on the 35th floor of the Venitian in the Harmon suite with my jaw on floor after a few minutes with these speakers, which look like ducks. They were using a very simple three piece Mark Levinson system (CD/SACD player, preamp and 300 WPC Stereo amp) not the super high end stuff. The sound was so dynamic, three dimensional, uncolored and REAL that it really did make me think I've been wrong about horns all these years. I heard some of the new huge SET/Cirular horn systems and thought they sounded awful BTW.

The people from Harmon told me to check out the K2s in their truck at the convention center, which I did the next day. The K2s sound very good, but I think I like the 1400s better, and they are much cheaper. At $11,500 they aren't cheap, but compared to the $100,000 plus Wilsons and Sonus Fabers down the hall, they seem like a steal, because I think they sound much better.

Did the JBL-1400s have room-shaking tight bass?

It is interesting that you said the more expensive JBL K2 actually did not sound as good to you as the JBL-1400s.

I recently listened to the Revel Salon2, which I thought was phenominal.

Some folks were saying that the JBL Synthesis K2 would sound even "better".

I thought, "And this is based purely on cost of the speakers? That more $$ means better sound?".

They had the 1400s set up in a medium sized well damped hotel room, and the K2s were in a reflective truck. The K2s were part of a multi-channel home theater setup where they were showing a western shoot 'em up scene, but the Harmon guys in the truck were kind enough to put the system (all JBL Synthesis gear) into 2 channel bypass mode for me and use the same demo disc they used up in the Venitian suite. The K2s sounded excellent, but they didn't seem to image as well as the 1400s. I think it may be the vertically oriented midrange horn, which I was told was stumbled upon by accident by Greg Timbers. They said Asians won't buy vertically oriented horns, so they don't even try to market the "Array" series over there. Hell, they don't really try to market it here, they had no literature at all at the Venitian, and almost nothing in the truck. They had to dig around for a few minutes to find anything.

So the rooms were hugely different, and the electronics were hugely different, with the benefit in both cases going to the 1400s. And the K2s are gorgeous, while the 1400s are butt ugly. They look like a cartoon duck to me, but man did they sound amazingly real.

Someone asked about bass, and it was very good, but they're down 3dB at 32HZ so they're not going to get your pants ruffling in the wind. The mid/hi horn assembly is sold separately and has a rated efficiency of 98 dB, while the 1400s are rated at a surprisingly low 89dB, so they're padding the hell out of the horns to bring them down to the efficiency of the woofer, but they're still incredibly dynamic.

And yes the Salons sounded excellent too, but just not as "real" as the ducks. I heard the Salons in both locations BTW, and they sounded pretty similar in the drastically different listening environments.

Yeah...that picture is not flattering, but the pictures in the Stereophile review aren't so bad.
They do look much better in color - I remember reading that review in the actual magazine. However, it's a bit of a moot point for me - although I don't have 'typical' WAF-issues with gear... if I spent that much, and they looked like that (coupled with the amount they weigh) - and I'd be listening to them out in the yard before long. :)

Actually a vertical horn doesn't make sense to me. I thought you were trying to take away the ceiling and floor and keep things on a horizontal plain. The Revel Salon uses a horizontal elliptical horn and Earl Geddes has stated in the past that he's considered horizontal elliptical horn as well with the Gedlee speakers.

I think it's different strokes for different folks. Perhaps you value precision imagine more than another person.

Either way JBL Pro's high end horns are definitely something I want to hear. Wasn't there a guy on here who sold his Revel Studio2s for a JTR btw? lol. More speaker companies need to implement compression drivers properly.

...

Not really. They only go down to 35 Hz. Bass was adequate but bass fiends would want a sub.
That is the one thing I do not like about the K2 & the 1400 - for that much money, I expect nothing less than a flat frequency response from at least 25Hz - 15kHz +/- 3dB @ 90dB/ 1 meter.

I guess it all depends on the application - room size.

Get me 65hz to 17khz perfect at any volume in any room and I will add a couple TC5400U's for the low end!

I couldn't agree more! 1400's and a swarm of massive subs equals audio nirvana for me. A pair will soon be mine!
