How about some middle ground.... 50" plasma and some inwall or onwall speakers....

As much as bigger is always better, I'm about 10-11' from my bedroom 50" plasma, Its a very big screen for me even at that distance. Also it is a 720p screen, and I couldn't tell the difference in HD from 720 to 1080p with that distance.... so I really don't feel the need to upgrade.

You are about 1/2 that distance at 5'.... so a 1080p would prob be best, but honestly a 50" should be more then adequate for you, unless the price is hardly different...

About the speakers, I guess you'd have to figure out what would be best, but there are tons of Onwalls out there that are actually not bad, or Inwalls too... Its just a bedroom system, so you don't really have to break the bank to get pretty good SQ. SVS decorative speakers...?

Maybe take a pic of the wall, try some masking tape to judge the screen size for you.... What are the room dimensions - wall size for tv?

I vote for 40" assuming you can find a good quality picture at that size.

Otherwise, perhaps a 42" plasma. I know Panasonic doesn't make their best model numbers at that size, unfortunately. I did a quick google on smaller/older Pioneers, none around, not surprised (they only seemed to make 50" on up at a certain point in time).

The size sort of depends on what you're watching. If you're like me, +99% bluray, I can see going up to 50, 54, but if there is any significant portion of SD viewing, or gaming, or even HDTV, I'd stay at 42" (which can still seem overwhelming in viewing angle, depending on the source material). That all said, 54" would be the closest to replicating my front row viewing angle (beats mine out by 0.8 degree). Again, no exaggeration, +99% bluray. I would not be surprised if I experimented with viewing angle more than any AHer in history.

At any of these sizes/angles, 1080p is a must, even at 40". Even at 37" it is an absolute must (still over 30deg angle). And even when smaller than that, will you be benefiting big time.

i already have the 40" LCD in my bedroom, i usually watch 1080p, 720p at worst.

and i already have the 54" plasma ... it's supposed to be for my living room, but i was thinking of using it in the bedroom. :) but my tv stand is only 60" wide, there's no space for decent bookshelves or towers.

thanks. i guess it's not the right time to change my display.

i'll go ahead and use the 54 in the living room. i'm just waiting for the wall mount which should come before christmas.

You have a TV stand?

Why?

:)

I just keep wondering how TV stands sell, when you can mount the TV on the wall and mount speakers on the wall, and you can hide your gear elsewhere and use a universal remote.

I mean, if you are renting, then I guess I get it... maybe. But, if you own a home, why not do it up right? Get that TV on the wall and get some nice wall mounted speakers to go with it and get that gear out of the way. It increases WAF and eases the Audioholic twitch for just a few hours... maybe.
