How to connect over-the-air antenna to Yamaha receiver.

Hello All,

I have a Yamaha RX-V565 AV receiver and an LG plasma TV. I needed to purchase a powered antenna for local HD channels because my house is on a hill and I do not get ANY reception without it.

I want to connect the antenna to the Yamaha to get the surround sound but can't seem to figure it out. The coaxial from the antenna goes in to only one place on the back of the receiver. It is also the only output available from the antenna. But I can't seem to get the signal from the receiver to the TV. I don't get anything. No sound. No picture. When I connect the antenna directly to the TV I do get all the channels but not in surround sound.

Can anyone help me out?

Thanks!

The receiver doesn't have an ATSC or QAM tuner. The antenna must be connected to the TV and then use the TV setup to scan for available stations. Connect an optical digital cable from the TV's digital out to any optical in on the receiver and assign that digital input to whichever input selector you want to use when listening to TV.

Many TVs will send DD 5.1 thru its optical digital output if the signal originated from the TV's internal tuner but some will downmix it to 2 channel PCM. If the TV only outputs 2 channel PCM then you'd have to use a matrix decoder, such as PLII, to turn it into surround sound.

Yes you need cable, satellite or an ATSC tuner to use your receiver. We need to know what your TV is to see if you can even get true surround from your TV, from most you can't.

Sorry I can't help you. There is an optical digital out, but it does not say what it outputs from the native tuner to that output. The download manual feature on that site seems not to work.

Just try connecting the optical out of TV to your receiver and see if you get multichannel Dolby digital. If you don't then you can't do what you want, without the further equipment I mentioned. The antenna connection on the back of your receiver is for FM radio only by the way.

Thank you.

Thanks for the info. I'll try it out when I get a cable.
