One thing I like about the 4000, is the "intelligent lens memory", where the PJ detects the AR and adjusts the lens to accomodate. I'm quite new to the PJ world, so I don't know if its a common feature - but I like it.

As for what features my next PJ might have, well, I can't see that far down the road. I'll just have to plan around this PJ. I can't say how OTA HD broadcasts compare to cable up here, as I haven't watched OTA for about 15 years. I don't even know who is still broadcasting OTA. We don't have cable card up here - don't nkow anything about it. If I understand correctly, TiVo requires cable card in order to use all of its features. Not certain about that. We have a motorola HD DVR for our bedroom and it works pretty well. Hard to appreciate HD on a 27" LCD though.

Hmmm, I had no idea that HD signals were compressed. Thanks for that tidbit.
You're welcome. The lens feature is not a common feature at all, quite unique in fact. However, you have absolutely no need for this with a 1.78 screen.

So leave it defeated. OTOH, you can make a few presets. Let's say a much reduced one for SD sources. Somewhat larger for "okay" or "upconverted" by the provider "HDTV", or "HD lite". Bigger yet for good "HDTV". Full blown for BD. Hehe.

Here is a great tool for us in finding stations and respective signal strength.

I dunno what happens if you try a Canadian address, but here is a blurb they have on CA.

Yeah, all the HD signals are compressed from the beginning. It's just that cable and sat providers compress them yet again. Even amazing blurays have to use compression, whether VC1 or MPEG4 of whatever. You know it was interesting to see in the beginning that it was some videophiles who were the biggest supporters of the advanced audio codecs: They wanted the extra disc space to further decompress their video.

I like the idea of the presets so that, as you said, adjust image size according to its PQ. I'll check out the links you provided. Thanks.

Gonna start mudding the drywall this weekend. I'm really looking forward to it...

Something came across my mind for you to research and report back on with angling speaker, and that is if there is any increased audible comb filtering issue. The very high intensity of smaller holes with this weave is designed to move comb filtering into much higher frequencies where we won't notice. My guess is it it will be totally fine, but always better to know for sure.
I was right to be concerned with this.

For my comb filtering worry, I'm really no longer worried. If Seymour advises experimentation with extreme toe in, then I am sure he would have mentioned any issue if all 3 were behind screen.
I am wrong to have then dismissed this concern.

Seymour said in this portion of an AVS quote from over three years ago (yeah, took me a while to find it):
chriscmore said:
I only have my center behind the screen. The L/R are towed (toed? toad?) for perfect 2-channel listening (vinyl, etc.) This allowed me to isolate any effect the screen had on the speaker. The TacT (full freq DSP) passed polarity fine. The Meridian passed polarity fine. The Lexicon’s RoomEQ is just a roll of the dice; independent of screen up/down or channel. And the four Denons with Audyssey installations I know of all reported to test fine. I researched other 5% woven AT screen owners and didn't find any evidence of polarity issues, either.

I don't recommend towing (toeing?) in the L/R speakers behind AT material. If the angle is significant, the drivers won't have open air paths to the seating. You want to fire straight through any AT screen in general. If you really have to angle the L/R, get them out from behind the screen to the sides. Ideal angle of incidence = 0.
How's the mudding going?

Thanks for all the investigating you've been doing, JM! I certainly haven't had time for it.

Got the first two coats of mud on, over the weekend. I had help from a friend - man do I owe him! As the saying goes, a friend will help you move, while a good friend will help you move a body. Well, a great friend will help you mud drywall.:D Depending on how good it looks after I sand the second coat, I should only need one more.

After that, I will get my wife to finally pitch in and do something - painting.

We still have to decide on the laminate flooring yet - have to do that soon. I know it's not the best option, acoustically speaking. But, she doesn't want carpet, so laminate it will be.

With out any hang-ups, this part of the project should be complete by the end of the month-ish. OK, first week of December - hopefully. Then, over the following few weeks, I can make detailed plans for the PJ and screen installation. Then after the Christmas season wraps up, I can get back to work on it.

Oh, and I'm pretty sure it's "toed".;)

I think it's too late for me, well actually I just don't have it in me to do it I think, but I just discovered this cool DIY, IR controlled, masking system. He said it was about $300 in parts. He used a Somfy, which Seymour also uses for their retractables. Programmed into his URC. To put the cost savings in perspective, a similar item from Carada for your ballpark size is about $2,700.

At say 108", you would need just under 7" extra clearance from top/bottom borders, assuming the panels were not AT. Just wanted to share my latest discovery. :p

Oooooooo! I like that! However, that would just be one more complication that I don't need. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Well, I've finished drywalling and I can confirm right now - drywalling sucks in technicolour! It looks pretty good, but what a struggle to get it that way. A pro would've gotten done sooner, I'm sure. But, I'm a bit of a control freak and couldn't surrender the job to somebody else.

My wife picked up the paint today and I imagine we'll get started on that tomorrow. At least, she will get started on it. I will be out in the driveway changing over to snow tires on both of our vehicles. I hope we have time to take a scoot over to the showroom, so that she can get an idea of how the PJ will look.

If all goes well, I'll be laying laminate next weekend.

After I get a few pics of the progress, I'll post some.
