Yesterday was the day. I found the receiver I have wanted for over a year. I have been holding out out for a cheaper price. I found my Onkyo TX NR3007 on clearance at my local best buy for $950 retail is around$ 2000! I'm. Not going to find a better deal than that. Bought it and installed it last night. I am upgrading from a 7 year old sony receiver. Obviously it was a night and day difference the shear power orbs onkyo is something to behold. I was up late and get a chance to do the audessey eq but already it sounds great. Now I am offically driving all 9.1 channels that I have. Below is a few pics I took and a link to the rest of the rooms pics.

Thanks guys! It is like a dream come true Haha. The great deal makes it even better. I can't wait to get out of work and fiddle around with it. Does anyone else bring the owners manual of their new HT gear to work as reading material or is that just me?

My tips for the Audyssey. Invest in a cheap mic boom, and mic adapter. Use all 8 positions, always, and even if just one captain's seat, use those 8 positions all around that seat. Write down all the settings it gives you, and then write all the new settings that you may have changed. You'll almost be guaranteed to reapply xover to the mains, if not other speakers. Not Audyssey's fault, it's the manufacturers.

I am sure it must have been remedied by this generation, but just in case it's anything like my 805, if the display seems extremely bright, you'll either want to always keep it at low setting, or replacing the resistor with a stronger one.

When you bitstream TrueHD, the Onkyo will always default/engage the autoflagged DRC. You have to hit "late night" twice to defeat it, and you can't really do it until TrueHD is selected and the movie is started. If sending as mch PCM predecoded from the PS3, no worries, just about every other brand out there does not have this issue.

That's all for now, and congrats on the beast.

Thanks for the great info. I will let you know how it turns out. One thing I can't figure out it how to have say pandora playing through onkyo then have the monitor be on my cable. I don't don't like how the pandora menu is still I don't want any potential burn in. Or is there a way to have the onkyo dim monitor without me having to turn the tv off. Thanks.

Um never used pandora, but if I understand you correctly, how about using one of the available pic modes on the TV itself. Set it to mega dim, save it to that pic mode, and use it for Pandora usage.

My humble cents: If you using hdmi to connect your monitor. Pure direct will turn off video all output as result your TV giving lack of any signal should turn-off

Ok ill try that. My wife is the one who listens to pandora and she was all excited to see we can play it in the living room. I just need a failsafe set up so she doesn't leave that menu up on my tv for hours on end ya know?

Last time I checked, Pandora had a built in screen saver (I use a Roku). The album cover floats around the screen after about 5 minutes.

Congratulations and enjoy the sound.

Just spoke to my brother who is the head sound guy for a wedding band and a bar/club. He is going to let me borrow his RTA mic to use for the audessey eq set up. He uses this mic to set up big pa systems so it should work nicely with the onkyo. Ill let you know how it turns out.

No. You must only consider using an OEM mic from Onkyo that is specifically calibrated for your specific receiver. If you bought this new, it should be included. If you are missing it, contact Onkyo for a new one. Fortunately, the replacement mics from Onkyo are considerably less than those from Denon, at least they were historically. Very likely under $20 shipped.

Oh I have the mic that came with the onkyo. I though you said to use another mic. Or did you just mean a mic stand?

Yes, I implied the stand when I said "boom", which is the arm so to speak.

Lemme look what I bought . . . .

$20

$7

doh, looks like this went up some in price, and is now $40 EDIT: correct link

Well, $67 does seem like a lot at first, but when I finally realized how many times I had ran Audyssey, and how many more times I will, I thought it was worth it. It may prove useful for other applications in the future as well I suppose.

Thanks for the great info! My bother is going to provide the stand I need. So as you said before I should use all eight mic positions during calibration? Below is a pic of the seating arrangement. Its an odd set up I admit but it works nicely. The seat in the center and one to the left or right are the primary seats used daily. Obviously I start with those three but what of the other five? Should I position the mic in each other seat which is only another 3 or as illustrated in the manual take a few more measurements around the primary seating area to I guess come up with a better acoustic average? I would rather it sound great in the main listenig area than just good all along the couch. Thanks again!

You're welcome CypherMax. Your brother is a bother? :p j/k. I hope he lives very close, in the chance that you run this as many times as I do. Cheers.

Yes, that is definitely what I said. Reason being is that the software is given as many snapshots of the big picture, for the best adjustments/decisions made overall for the room.

Concentrate all 8 positions over these 3 spots then. Let's see . . . hmm . . . how about 6 spots for the 6 ears. Use the extra two somewhere strategically, whether in between the three spots, or let's say just forward and backward of the captain's seat.

Should I position the mic in each other seat which is only another 3 or as illustrated in the manual take a few more measurements around the primary seating area to I guess come up with a better acoustic average? You can do all 8 around the main position too instead.

*side note: I would leave those blankets there when you run it. Obviously, if that's how they are all the time, it would make sense. But, even if they are only there occasionally, some people have tried to mimic the absorption of humans and their clothing by covering reflective leather seating with more absorptive blankets just for the calibrations.
