AM/FM Tuner help?

Hi

I have a Denon AVR 2105 Receiver, and just wondering your thoughts as to whether it is a good idea to bi-pass the inbuilt Tuner and buy a separate one, possibly a Denon to improve the music experience?

I also realize that reception is a major part and will be looking at an FM antenna on the roof.

Any advice on this, and should I be looking at a Hi-Fi DAB+ tuner/radio instead, even though the stations I listen to are not Digital yet.

I'm in Werribee/Melb and mainly listen to PBS, RRR and occasionally JJJ

Yes, it would help if you posted on an Australian forum.

However if you want DAB in Australia you need a DAB+ tuner. DAB+ I have not heard. The UK was an early adopter and is DAB. The BBC would like to go to DAB+ but there is resistance as everybody would have to but a new tuner.

However I doubt DAB+ will beat good FM with a roof Yagi Uda array. If it does not by much. Your main advantage would be to receive stations only broadcasting in DAB+ and not FM

Your FM equalization is 50 msec, like the UK. So you will have to purchase your unit in Australia. You need 50 msec equalization and DAB+.

If you want to purchase an AM/FM/DAB+ tuner, I would recommend this one.

You are likely to get bad and erroneous advice from most posters on a US forum.

Receiver tuners, by the way are not usually top drawer, but some a good. I have no idea about the quality of yours.

You might want to switch your priorities here and go for the antenna first. You will be surprised at what a difference it makes. My Denon 2802 does fairly well with a rooftop antenna.

P.S. This advice is valid for all countries, but since you're in OZ, you might want to mount it upside down.

If we had more decent stations to listen to, more of us would be interested. Besides, most people here never knew anything about tuners, anyway. Many know absolutely nothing and think that the only answer to bad reception is an RF amplifier, even if the issue is front-end overload. Mention 'multi-path' and their eyes glaze over.

I've been playing this game since the early 60's and I'm pretty sure there are quite a few others here that fall into that category as well.
