Primus 362 tempation

I want to buy new rears for my 5.1 system (see sig).

I was thinking to stay under $300, but the Infinity Primus P362 for $400/pr keep tempting me!

Usage: 60% movies, 40% music, ranging from classic rock to jazz to classical. The room is 12 wide by 20 long with an 8 ft ceiling. My primary listening position is on the width axis about 2 feet to the right of center and on the length axis about 14 feet back. The rears would be much closer to me, at about 3 ft for the right rear (and almost directly behind me) and at about 7 ft over my left shoulder for the left rear.

Thoughts?

Hi Ernie, I have the p362's and also the HB-1's you are using currently. For your rig, I think the P362's would be absolute overkill for rears. Rears just aren't used that much in sound tracks, you could do almost as well with much lesser speakers than the p362's. That being said, yes, the Primus would make fantastic rears, and be a big improvement over the little Hsu VT254 rears you are using. If you have money you are just itching to spend, and want to try out some new gear, than go for it. But I don't think it will be a mindblowing change in your system, simply due to the nature of rear channel programming. I think you could get 95 percent of the sound improvement of p362's as rears from the p162's or p152's.

+1 I think you'd be just as well off saving a few bucks and using 152s.

Why not match the surrounds with your fronts? ( I am going by your signature system ).

I mean you were about to dump $400 on a totally different brand/sound signature, why not just get some bookshelves or even floorstanders that sound signature matches your HSU setup.

I vote Hsu HB-1 Mk 2 all-around.

I would bite the bullet, go get the P362 and PC350 for the front and move the little ones to the rear to get a 6.1 system that will be great for 2 channel music enjoyment too.

According to Dr. Toole, Surrounds and fronts don't need to match because the sound hits the ear at different angles negating any sound signature mismatch issues.

362 discontinued

Apparantly the P 362s are being discontinued. There is no more stock in the Audioholics Store (per a phone call yesterday evening). I went on Amazon and ordered them for about $30 more, but I think I got the last ones there as well.

I may end up moving these eventually to another location, which is why I'm getting them.

Thanks to everyone for your comments.

I would think the P362s would make better fronts than surrounds in that system, it's a far more capable speaker than the HB-1 mk II.

As owner of both, I would say in some respects they are, but in other respects they are not. With a subwoofer being used, their advantages are diminished.

I don't disagree, that's why I said ... 2channel music...... Many people prefer to leave the sub off when listening to 2 channel music especially classical music.

Since you already got them, why not experiment, by swapping them with the HSU's up front (placing the HSU's in the rear)?

Their replacements should be interesting.

cheers,

I know there are people who do this, but I think this is a terrible mistake. A properly setup subwoofer is a tremendous asset to many orchestral recordings. I think their reasoning may be the fewer transducers involved, the purer the sound, but what good is that when you omit the lowest octaves, the most powerful sounds of all? Unless your left and right is truly full range, there should always be room for a sub (or two).

They are very similar to the Revel Concerta so I wonder if they will replace them. I think the Cascade series is the future direction of Infinity especially with the woofer they have in it.

+1. I think the problem that some people have comes from the days before good quality subs were affordable and before they knew how to blend them in seamlessly.

It depends on the music you listen to. For some, getting to the mid 30's is all that's needed. For other music, you better have a sub, (or a mega system).

Wonder no more.

Appears to be another cosmetic refresh.
Of course, at $330 ea now, they may sound better to those who do "just listening"

That's what happens when they get too much praise! The price gets jacked up!:(

We will now have to start bashing these speakers until the price comes back down...:D

I am hoping they added some internal bracing, since they've been a resonant nightmare.

It doesn't appear that the weight has changed, not a good sign.
