Hey guys,
I need your thoughts on something I was told or suggested to do. I bought a new phono cartridge and I was told before doing any VTA or SRA adjustments to run the cartridge in the runout groove of an album for 24 hours. I'd like to hear your thoughts on this procedure. Thanks for listening.

Aside from creating a lot of heat at the stylus, what's the logic behind this? The VTA won't change at all if you do this, or not. If the VTA is incorrect, it's not going to mircaulously be good after this and if you think about it, not only will the stylus be worn, the record will be worn, too.

I have been in the consumer audio industry for over 30 years and this is the first time I have heard of this. I know several people who own/work for high end shops, too.

Nutty advice just never stops; does it? The nuttiest advice like this comes from people who have no clue how anything works!

That sounds like a really good way to ruin a cartridge before you get to use it. So don't do it.

Thanks for the heads up, this advice came from a very reputable ID retailer, his logic was to break in the stylus, and after the 24 hour period the stylus would have lag as he called it and then you could adjust the VTA accordingly. I'm glad I posted this. Thanks highfigh.
