Suggestions for a ~$1K 2.0 DIY Speaker Build

So far the Mission Statements are what I have been looking at.

My music collection consists mainly of Rock and Classical (60/40 split). I want a speaker with slam (think Rush YYZ) but also great midrange and imaging (think Rachmoninov, Vivaldi, Holtz, Bach, Mahler etc...)

with DIY I think building something your familiar with is a good thing, but have you ever heard a good TL. I know TLS has some alternative Thor TL options that you might consider. They are great speakers for sure. Zaph also has many excellent designs.

1. It's kind of a request build by SB Acoustics
2. My wife saw it
3. While I don't have a high Aesthetic, this speaker does manage to dip below that thresh hold.

I looked at the SB job Zaph did. Unfortunately:

1. It's kind of a request build by SB Acoustics

It's one of many options, but I think the Thor TL would be a much better choice. Another option would be to build your own 3-way or 2-way.

Here is a design that may suit your needs. The driver selection is what I am suggesting you look at. Enclosure would be up to you however. Pete does well with his designs and has done some further tweaks on them.

The Thor TL is 50% over my budget...

I was also thinking about floor standing Natalie P's with an 8 inch side firing sub and a DCX to integrate it all.

My issue is this: Not all program material that you want to experience that tactile slam with is in the sub 100hz range. I built the Zaph ZA5.3c center channel and compared it to the ZDT3. While it articulated a little better under normal to low volumes, when getting on the volume knob the ZDT3 with the larger woofers simply just had more tactile feel and slam to them.

I just seems between $700-1000 there is not to much representation in the DIY.
Plus I don't want another pair of my ZDT3.5's. I want to try something else.

For starters I would be afraid to veer from his box design. Seems to be an integral part of his approach. 2nd that cabinet looks like a nightmare to construct. But it really looks like a performer with all the right parts.

The RS28a is a killer tweeter even ignoring it's price, the Scanspeak is a killer mid-woofer and a great low distortion sub. Hmm...

Both are great individual drivers which is why I would suggest them in such an application.

The Exodus Audio Anarchy mid/woofer is an excellent choice for sub 2K response and may be worth a look in a, dare I say it, 4 way option (?).

Small crossover tweaks could be made to adjust for the cabinet differences, if needed as well?

I though I mentioned it, but TLS has a much lower cost set of drivers for the Thor. I wasn't thinking you'd buy the kit itself.

As far as the Anarchy goes it's a great driver, but I'd stick to MTM on your budget. Amps and crossovers are cost prohibitive IMO. FWIW a great box can do wonders with average drivers.

That was my thinking when suggesting the Gedlee Harper 8, especially when I know he has a quality sub sitting around unused.
