I'll say. Rick has got the food thing down. They call people like him foodies. I like food a lot and when I tell you that it was something ... you can believe me. It really wasn't fair that I had to explain to Cheryl the significance of flip flops ... nailed to a telephone pole.
SWIMBO graciously agreed to accompany me and Rick & Co. saw to it that she thoroughly enjoyed herself. I just got back home. Real quick I wanted to say that on the drive back Cheryl said in reference to the Sig8's: those speakers are gorgeous. Between them and some Epic sub Rick uses I'll say that the bass comes from everywhere. It comes from everything. The air pulses. Granted Rick had the sub about 10db hot but with
Money For Nothing it was a lot of fun to listen to. With Mark's tune of choice,
Walk of Life, it quickly became obvious that it needed to be turned down. Rob has dual Avaserfi Perfects. I would very much like to hear from him what he thought of that bottom end integration and power.
Doug and I both noticed that with
I Feel Love the volume seemed to drop a little inexplicably. I just remembered that I heard that at Walter's as well. It's in the recording. I had forgotten about it until now. I think it may be more noticeable on a system cranked to ear bleed levels. Doug owns the same DVD and I would like to hear from him if he can notice it on his copy. I don't think first time listeners caught that.
A different room is the home of Mark's Magnapans and a pair of Walter recommended Audio Source Coherent Pulses that we unfairly AB'ed because we could. I am sick of The Dire Straights. I heard them repeatedly on 3 different systems that day after listening to them at Walter's a couple of days before that and of course at home because I wanted to compare that sound to mine ... enough already.
It's all a little subjective but with my copy of
Ode de Joy I made some comparisons to having heard it on Greg's Studio 100's. I think Greg's amp might have given the Studio 100's more dynamic range. I actually tried to take notes this time but that's not easy when you're vocabulary limited. I am slowly learning that budget, appearance and configuration count for a lot. Like if you can afford the Sig8's ... just get them. They sound and look great. I don't think they're rear ported or anything so placement shouldn't be problematic. The Maggies sound wonderful but require a lot of free space in a room so if you can't swing that the Coherent Pulses sound good too and are easier on placement requirements. We talked about it and applied 'the right tool for the right job' slant to which speaker would be right for any particular situation. That's deep, huh?
Rick's wife is about as sweet as pie and I want to thank her for putting up with all this audio nonsense.
She deserves another *hundred pair of shoes.
* a number that is in contention.
