The Sunfire does not have dual subwoofers It has one active driver and a passive radiator. Instead of releasing energy through a port the Sunfire uses the passive radiator. A passive radiator is a cone only, it has no magnet or power going to it.

The Sunfire might go lower, but my personal experience with Sunfire would advise you to go another route. They are notoriously difficult to position in the room, and they often require unconventional positioning which works well for some, and not for others. Sunfire amps are also notorious for humming. I also think these subwoofers have sloppy bass response, which takes the enjoyment out of using it.

Now look at the size of each subwoofer. If size is not a concern I'd suggest sticking with the JL. The JL is a much larger subwoofer and the driver is more robust than the one in the Sunfire. The amplifier is more refined in the JL as well. Your top output will be greater with the JL, and the frequency response will be smoother. The subwoofer will be easier to place.

The specifications seem to be measured differently. I think Sunfire uses optimistic measuring methods to come up with their results, where JL doesn't seem to as much. The frequency response of the Sunfire per their site says 16hz-100hz and the JL claims 21hz-112hz with 1.5 decibels of deviation. It also claims at 3dB deviation it goes down to 19hz and down 10dB it will do 17hz.

If you have a way, try one of each in your home. Compare the two and make your decision based on what you hear.

I have heard good things about the quality of bass the Sunfire’s produce, but I have also heard bad things about their quality of lasting.
But I have no first hand experience with either.

The JL F113 was the least impressive sub I have owned. Great for music and horrible for HT. Maybe in a small room it would be ok but in my giant room, it would fall apart at -20 (0 = 75db) when watching a dynamic movie. I really don't enjoy my sub sounding like a coffee percolator.

If you want a great plug and play sub, the SVS PB13 is difficult to beat.

Freq PB13U F113 PB13U Advantage Acoustic Output

20 108.5 101.3 2.3X

25 112.4 105.5 2.2X

32 115.8 109.8 2.0X

40 116.9 114.0 1.4X

50 115.8 116.5 NA

The JL F113 is a fantastic sub when used appropriately, in your stadium sized room, your not going to get what your looking for from a sealed 13" sub....

The PB13 Im sure is better in terms of output as its a large ported box, but I still doubt you have what your looking for with a single sub in there....

I have absolutely no experience with any of the Sunfire, but I will agree with the SVS being a excellent sounding top performer. I do however have a F112 in a medium small room and its output and SQ performance is amongst the best I have heard - and I own the best I have heard.... TC-Sounds 18" LMS's and there is no contender !!

Ha - who are you kidding, I have 3 boxes for my currently running 18" LMS's and I'm just waiting for my new boxes so I can add 3 more 18" LMS's to my current array, which still blows away any and all subs you have ever dreamed of having BRO !!!! :D

The F113 was the worst sub you ever owned for your application, which ultimately was a poor choice to begin with :D

I don't think the Fathoms are that bad. I guess for a large room you definitley require more than 2+. In my room 2 fathoms are more than enough and work extremely well. But I'm always intrested in different subs to maybe see if it worth the upgrade.

First off...not everyone is rich like you...

Second...if you weren't so selfish, I would have the exact subs that you have since I asked you to either build me some or sell me yours...

Consider yourself lucky that I have no building skills.:D

Oh really, may I ask how much you paid for that pool of yours? Don't blame me for you making poor decisions and getting married and letting your woman take control of your money  :p

I might have the skills but lack the expertise and time for a sexy finished product, so I had to sub that job out, not sure at this point if that was a good idea. Maybe I'll see them boxes yet after this long wait... :(

There is also a 15" in there too...
Yeah, it'll def be overkill, but my room is like a freakin stadium - what I have now is dam impressive, but its close to pushing the drivers limits to get the output I want and like... :)

Franin - I assume you are looking for a bit more output then the F112's are providing in your room.... but need a small good performing product... somewhat the same as F112's you have now... That is a hard piece of physics to overcome.... What is the largest box size you could entertain comfortably...?

The pool was $23.79.

I could have saved some money but I really wanted the Sun Fish.

I have secret bank accounts and she thinks I make 20k/year.:D

You could still man-up and sell my your new subs if the boxes ever get done.

Hahahaha Thats awesome.... :D

Yeah, its killin me that John @ AE still doesn't have them done. I have had all the supplies in place for a while now - new drivers, all 6 amps are tested and mounted in the rack downstairs. Just need to figure out placement when I get them for wiring, wire the boxes and stuff them, drop in the drivers and start the rigorous procedure of EQ'ing them all together.... Replacing 3 Single driver boxes with 3 Dual Opposed 18" LMS, basically the same layout, just doubling up on drivers and moving to a better vibration free design.

I get a message from him every couple of weeks stating that he'll be finishing them up this week... The boxes are already built and have been for quite some time, all he has to do is re-veneer them...

Hey Warp,

You are not the only one waiting on something from John. I have been waiting for 2 AV-12X and 4 PR15-1400 for over a month now. It is a good thing my customers are very patient and not in a hurry.

They are trying to get a new thermo-former machine up and running since they will be doing their own surrounds now as well for their subs. Beth said they should be back into production mode in about a week to a week & 1/2 (I called on Wed. last week).

Yeah, I'm am not happy at all with this, were going on the 5th month here, he has been struggling on veneer. 1st batch came scratched, and then he ended up re-veneering them and is working on them I guess. Then came all his business problems with a supplier. From his last email this may be the golden week. I really hope so...

Too funny you mention this......... I just ordered a Submersive HP in Espresso to replace the JL F112, as the Price goes up after tomorrow.
Talked to Mark last night on the phone, and it'll be 3 weeks before the next batch of amps will be in....

So the F112 will be going up for sale soon.... :D
