Can towers be used as rear speakers

I am getting good deftech towers for cheap from local craigslist. Can they be used as rear speakers? I have mostly seen small speakers as rear speaker. Is there anything wrong in using big speakers at rear?

Yes, but they are somewhat overkill, since that broad a range of audio doesn't go to them. I use a pair of Boston VR940's as my rears just because I already had them, they look cool, and I don't need stands for bookshelves now.

As other posters said, they will work fine but, unless multi-channel music is your main goal, they are overkill for HT.

One thing to keep in mind though: Some think that the ambient sounds and SFX from HT benefit from coming from a higher point than the mains.

This might sound silly, I had larger bookshelf speakers as rears and recently swapped them out for slightly smaller bookshelf speakers. I'm sure it's just a acoustic differences between the speakers but I am hearing more from the smaller ones, I 'notice' the rear channels more, in a good way. I think I'm finding the smaller ones to handle those higher pitches better than the large ones.

I believe towers will be fine, it's more about the individual speaker and how pleasing they are to you (in the specific job you have them doing) than the speaker's config. If you like their sound quality at a variety of ranges you've probably got a great choice, even if it is overkill.

I use Def Tech BP10s for surround back speakers in my main HT system, they look and sound great.

My rear speakers are the BP7001SC, which is like 48" high or something.

They sound great for surround sound.:D

I think IF DefTech comes out with a new flagship to replace the BP7000SC, I might have to upgrade and move the BP7000SC to the rear for 7.1.

Oh, and by the way, for AUDIOHOLICS, NOTHING, and I mean NOTHING is OVERKILL!!!!! :)

Then why don't you already have a 7.1 system with all BP7000SC and dual or even quad trinity subs?

Not enough money right now.

Everything is based on how much money you have available.

Besides, the BP7000SC is already the flagship.

Now if they were to come out with a new flagship, UPGRADITIS might set in.:D

My next target right now is getting a JVC RS25 PJ. :D

Damn it. For a second there I thought you were serious! And my eyes got this big:eek:.

They need to make a 60" tall w/ 18" 2,000W subs and the frequency needs to be 16 Hz - 20 kHz +/- 3dB (of course confirmed by HTM or S&V:D).

Better yet, they need to go the RBH route and make the Sub Amps separate so that people can have the option of either a 18" Passive or 18" Active Sub.
