so i was wondering how often people here pick up new albums? what format do you usually pick them up on? (i would hope not mp3 :p) me, i usually get an album or two every 2-4 weeks. my choice format is DVD-A, unfortunately not many artists are taking advantage of it :(,i usually buy CD's otherwise, although i have a lot of albums on MP3 and AAC from awhile ago.

Almost every week, and I'm always looking for the best format available, SACD, DVDA, XRCD, Japanese editions, etc. I usually go to the used cds stores where I've found a lot of excellent used titles for very low prices.

Usually at least once a week. If an LP or SACD option is available, I'll pick those first, but I'll usually find the titles I like first then see what formats are available.

99% of my purchases are cds. I've purchased something like 150 cds this year, but that's a bit more than usual. Only one was vinyl (7"), and another was digital (lossless ape).

I go out looking for something interesting every two or three weeks. Generally I have some CD in mind and then supplement it from the used CDs in my local store. I mainly buy CDs, since that's what's available, along with an occasional vinyl disk. I have some SACDs and DVDA's but those have pretty much disappeared from stores. I will probably rip it to my IPhone for a while if I like it a lot, and I don't spend much time concentrated on a sweet spot that would justify better formats, so CDs are the most adaptable.

well and then again CD's do sound very good. i don't see super high quality stuff taking off for a very long time like 5+ years, unfortunately, thank god for Dolby matrix decoders :D

What's unfortunate is that NONE of the new CDs I buy seem to ever sound any better than just OK (referring to recorded sound quality, not the music). It seems as though almost everything I buy that is old sounds better than anything new. New recordings seem to aim to be only as good as they need to be to survive being ripped and played through $20 earbuds.

slowly but surely

Once a month. Usually 1 to 3 titles, depending on price. Mostly CDs; DVD-A or SACD when the title I'm looking for is available and affordable.
Only 5 times I have downloaded music: 3 lose songs from itunes, 4 EPs from burning shed (good quality mp3s). Concert DVDs I rent from Netflix, I don't expect to watch them more than a couple of times.

I am about the same 1-3 titles a month if there is anything I am interested coming out. I picked up the new Godsmack last week and I am not too impressed with it.

Yes, and I only like one song from them.

Check out Porcupine Tree. I've seen them twice. Excellent and not like everything else.

A couple of CDs a month. I used to think MP3s were the greatest thing ever (easy to download, very little disk space) but have recanted of such evil!

I am extremely irregular in my purchases. In part, this is due to already owning over 1500 CDs, so anything new needs to be really good or it is a bad buy. I already have music for almost any occasion.

I prefer Hybrid SACDs, so I can play them on anything that can play CDs, but also have (often) a multichannel option as well. Unfortunately, very few things are on Hybrid SACD, so I usually end up with CDs.

I've been tracking down some albums related to songs that I love but never owned the album as well as finding some golden nuggets on Amazon for items that have been long OOP to replace lost or stolen albums. So really, I am "backfilling" my collection :) I just found one today that I only have on cassette and I found it available on MP3 and CD. Added to cart :D I've been buying about 3x the amount of music I normally do lately.

I buy music once or twice per week. Typically I buy music on evenings when I'm listening to the system the most (typically Tuesday nights when the wife is at class teaching). Amount of music I buy varies depending on the amount of time I listen to the system. In 2011 so far I've bought 25 CD's & SACD's from Amazon (their prime membership is just an enabler...). I try to buy SACD's while I can find them, and DVD-Audio discs are even harder to find, but if an album I want was ever made on SACD or DVD-A, I try to find it via third party Amazon sellers or eBay as long as it's not over say $30. Otherwise I'll just by the CD. I occasionally will buy vinyl, but that's maybe 4-5 albums per year. If I run across one of my favorite albums on vinyl, I'll buy it just to have it. Vinyl is still fun to me, but I'm not a vinyl nut.

I find new music via suggestions from friends, other musicians, other members here, Rolling Stone magazine reviews, equipment reviews when a reviewer says "this is a reference disc of mine..." I often will try to find it on Amazon and listen to the track samples if available, and if it's something I think I might like, I'll buy it as long it's not a $100 out of print SACD...

If there's a disc you feel is simply one of the best albums you own &/or is a must have reference disc, drop me a PM. I'd like to check it out.

Years ago...

Years ago, I used to buy CD's left and right.
I currently have have over 800+ and I RARELY have time to listen
to any of them.
WHY? Well, I work crappy hours, and by the time I come home,
it's either too late, or i'm just too tired.
I have Sirus/XM in the car ONLY.
I listen to that when i'm traveling back and forth to work
and other things.
IF I had a TON of money, there are at LEAST 200+ more that I would
buy. However, with all of my bills, HIGH gas prices, etc.
I can no longer have ANY FUN when MONEY is concerned!
The last time I bought CD's were back in July/Aug. 2010.
I bought at least 14-16 cd's and they were all releases
from the late 80's and early 90's Hard Rock/Glam Metal genre.
One was RUSH-Different Stages,
one was Pink Floyd-Delicate Sound Of Thunder.
The rest were the Glam Metal stuff like
Wildside, Roxy Blue, Mcqueen Street, Shotgun Messiah, Dokken, etc.
Lately, I have bought a couple of Concert DVD's,
again there's only been 2 in the last 6 months.
