It's Funny Speaker Time! (FST)

Yay!

Welcome to my first episode of "Funny Speaker Time" which I may refer to as "FST".

In my browsing pages of Optimus speakers on Ebay I came across perhaps one of the most inept attempts to modify a pair of Optimus Pro LX10 towers.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260612363529

The first and most immediate fault was the new tweeter. For those that don't know the LX10 comes standard with the Linaeum bi-pole tweeter which has a very excellent ability for one and of access linearity. This guy replaced the original tweeter (hopefully because they weren't working) with cheap bullet tweeters facing in the same direction. You'll notice the guy goes on to claim the tweeters give "360 degree rotation". Maybe the tweeter's are swivel mounted, what else would "rotation" possibly mean?

Going around the speaker there are other modifications. He mentions the custom dust caps give the speaker smoother and more accurate vocals and deeper bass. I'd certainly like to know what that's possible.

The only cabinet modification he mentions doing should decrease bass performance. He added a port to the top rear of the speaker. For those that don't know, the LX10 is not chambered. Adding a second port is just going to cause problems.

This may all be fine and well, assuming he wasn't off his rocker on the price. He's currently asking $435 and mentions he intends to jack the price back up to $500 at the end of the month even though it was $480 before he dropped it to $435.

When you are done rolling on the floor about these speakers check out his other "custom high end speakers".

Oh, and we had an interaction as well.

Why are you asking so much for these speakers? Collectors are interested in the Pro LX10 because it is the largest of the Linaeum speakers offered by Optimus. If anything the modifications you've done have absolutely killed the value of these speakers. The cabinet alone is nothing special, and that's pretty much all that's left of that speaker that makes any sense after what you've done to it.

Your other pair of speakers look pretty funny too. Are those KLH woofers on the bottom? You may go down in history as the worst con-artist of all time.

If you take time to "read" the modifications done to the Optimus Pro LX-10, and the other custom made speakers it may enlighten the way you make assumptions and waste my important time writing back to you.

You might be going down as "the most ignorant" amateur customer ever of all time!

Oh, Sorry....did that strike a nerve?

Now, remember! Read "the whole add" before you make assumptions.....You might just get smarter!

I've modified and built speakers for over 25 years! Also built speakers for several churches out-beating a pair of EV's that I recently replaced at a church.

I'm an Audiophile speaker specialist! Not an audio/video salesmen like you! Well? That's what your seller name claims to say even though you show an empty page.

KLH? Are you kidding me?

Now go find someone else to play with.
I'm too busy to play with little amateurs!

Well, that "Custom-Mounted 1.0 uf Capacitor" must be worth something...

That is well beyond inept. That is idiotic.

LMAO!

Yeah, that was my general thought. I just loved how he thought I might not have a clue about how speakers work and that I might really feel like an idiot.

A pair of Pro LX10s (stock) are worth about $200-300. His are worth about $25.

Word of the Day

Inverse Midas

which describes what this guy has been doing to speakers for 25 years.:D
3. Barry: This oil spill is a catastrophe, BP's engineers really have the Inverse Midas touch
Kim: I have on my big boy glasses
Barry: Sure you do.

What are the odds that this guy has a white van parked in his driveway?

Ok, I read "the whole add" and there is absolutely no explanation for why he did what he did to these speakers. And he seems especially pleased with his "Custom-Mounted 1.0 uf Capacitor" which is cutting all frequencies below what, 12000 hz or so? So unless those are the most capable 7 inch "speakers" (he describes "speakers" and "tweeters") of all time, what he has created is something with an enormously gaping hole in the frequency range. Epic fail.

More like a short yellow school bus.

I am sure those tweeters sound spectacular with them bouncing directly off the top plate. No combing at all... And the look so well mounted. This guy isn't even a novice tinkerer.

After having been responded to in such a fashion by the guy I sent him a reply.

Holy mother of the Lord who is heaven!

I can see now regardless of what I say would have no affect on what so ever. You're a rock man.

I respectfully apologize for insulting what I'm sure is a marvelously modified speaker. I mean, two ports, front and rear, in a non chambered cabinet?!?! That's genius! Mounting two mono pole tweeters facing the same direction somehow creates 360 degree sound? Putting dust caps on the original woofers suddenly makes "smoother and more accurate vocals and deeper bass" when dust caps have very little to do with the tonality. Hell, maybe I'm just not a seasoned audiophile specialist like you and things like science are just around to trick people into not making good speakers. I imagine if I directed Floyd Toole to your listing he'd be amazed how you completely ignored basic speaker design concepts and still managed to modify those into an astounding speaker. I feel obligated to now share your listing with a large group of friends now.

You are awesome!
He sent me another message, OH GOODY. This time he says he's going to school me. I guess this is where the short bus comes in.

him said:
It doesn't bother me what you do with your friends. I don't even know them. And I'm not interested in your opinions and theirs!

Look why don't you just buy them and try them for yourself! And stop wasting your saliva going back and forth with me.

Oh? Let me also school you a little! But, of course you will need more training!

1. Different sizes and materials for dust caps can change the tonality and vocal presents -Lesson number 1....

2. The tweeters can "turn" 360. Where ever you want to face them! Got it? I just happened to be facing them both the same way. Wow? Even a 10 year old could understand what I mean.

3. The rear "tube port" creates better "efficiency" and "greater bass response" for both the mid-woofer and and lower-woofer. It creates less stress to the upper mid-woofer. Capeesh?

There's always a pest that comes along and wants to argue a subject and don't have anything better to do in there life! Seriously...Go play with your toys! Really!

I hope you learned your lesson and have taken' some notes.
I got schooled so hard.:D

Really? WHERE ARE YOUR MEASUREMENTS proving any of what you've claimed? We came up with a new word that suits this guy's attitude quite well: Moronosity.

1) No they won't. Intermodulation of slight reflections within the driver's cone are affected by the dust cap, however adding one to a driver that didn't have one isn't going to change the timbre of that driver to the degree that anyone could actually HEAR it. Lesson #1 - you don't have any idea what you are talking about.

2) If you "turn" the tweeters, you destroy any imaging that the speaker might have had and based on the positioning of the tweeters in this design, I doubt this speaker had any. DUH, even sperm know that.

3) A port does not add efficiency. It may add bass response, but only when one actually takes the time to MEASURE the response and design it appropriately. It certainly isn't going to work for BOTH drivers unless they are playing the same thing.

Gotta love this line from him.

"Look why don't you just buy them and try them for yourself!"

D'oh! Uh... yeah!! I'll show him! I'll buy them just to show me that they don't suck! That'll teach him...

wait, what?

You really should send him a link to this thread. We could have a lot of fun with him.

Maybe he'd be willing to buy them back at the $500 price. After all, these speakers are one of a kind. Or is that two of a kind?

I'm going to mount rollers on the bottom of all my speakers. This way, the tweeters will be 360's.

This kinda reminds me of a story the girl cutting my hair told me one day. This 19 - 21 year old girl told me that she had retired from racing cars. (Retired?)
Me: What kind of cars did you race?
Her: A Honda Civic.
Me: Oh, you had it all worked out?
Her: Huh? What do you mean?
Me: Did it have a blower, or NOZ?
Her: It was stock!
Me Oh?
Her : Yeah, but I had the whole stereo system worked up. It even had tweekers.
Me: Tweekers?
Her: You know. The little ones that tweek the sound. Duh...
Me: How much for the cut?

Yeah, we know who the tweaker is....

At the shop where I get my car worked on one of the mechanics competes in SCCA with a 1st gen Integra heavily modified and a worked CRX. Budget racers :)

Seth, just ask him if he has a 30day trial period and a money back guarantee like all other internet direct speaker manufacturers? :D
