Let's Improve Walter's Sound

So I'm headed out to Walters tomorrow to make sure his plasma doesn't come down and get goodies that he wants to give me. I swear I don't have a gun to his head or nothing like that. Anyway here's his current layout.

My thought was to get that decorative thing out of the corner and jam the equipment rack into the corner. I would then put the right speaker against the rack and put the better of those subs in between the TV stand and the speaker. The left speaker would move left to maintain symmetry. That would get the sub out of the middle of the room and about a 1/4 of the way down the wall away from the corner.

I've got a Rives Disc that we could do a before and after test with.

How's that sound so far and does anybody else have any bright ideas? :)

If Walter was a personal friend, and he invited me over, to ask me: "Yo homeslice, figure out how to make this sound as good as possible, and no I don't care how ugly you make it look . . . "

1. I see if it's oriented lenghtwise, or widthwise, because I cannot tell from the pic. We want lengthwise. I also see if he is backed up to the back wall, where I would then pull the couch away as far as I could get away with. A final compromise could be to pull couch for critical listening, and pushing it back for everyday life.

2. I play with speaker positioning, big time. I mean big time. Like they are in the way, and you can barely walk around that area. Depending on the seated distance, I'd pull mains further apart from each other, and further away from the front wall. Use stereo only to figure that out.

3. After that I'd play with the center speaker. I would ideally like to raise it more, decouple it more, and pull it from front wall more.

4. If the mains image much better with a significantly greater space between them, I might swap the positions of right main and equipment rack, and left main with subwoofer(s).

5. If this kind of spread is ideal, make sure to toe-in ideally. Also, because of the much closer position of the right speaker to sidewall, acoustic treatments might become more desirable at that sidewall as well as corner. Regardless if anything changes at all, treating the front wall will likely have benefits, ESPECIALLY when the speakers are already so close to that front wall.

That's my start . . .

You can blindfold Walter so that he doesn't immediately dislike a setup because of the aesthetic/practical compromise. But, if a certain setup sound sooo much better, even if as an impossibility, you/he will likely be more motivated to find that perfect in-between compromise. If he agrees to be blindfolded, it could be fun to strip down naked when he's not looking, before moving stuff around.

Get the L/R speakers spread as far apart as possible (as determined by the distance they are from the primary seating). Determine which sub is best and lose the inferior one. Using two mismatched subs always results in overall performance being “dumbed down” to the level of the inferior sub.

Headphones...:D Just kidding!:)

You just gotta get your monkey butt over there and work within the limitations Walter lays out. (this is a joke also...I know you are incapable of respecting boundaries...BTW it still hurts.;):D:D:D)

if that were mine. i would start with:

move the tv out from the wall a few inches.
raise up the center to the bottom of the tv.
take the lesser sub and try it behind my seat.
i don't see any of this happening.

widen and toe in the mains.
i expect this to happen.

Aside from this post all the others were very helpful. :D

Seriously, I think we have some sort of consensus here and I appreciate being able to use it in persuading Walter to try new stuff out.
So, thanks ... yes, even Doug. :p

I'm pretty sure that was already the plan...:D

Hey Alex, how long does it take you to get out there?

I think we are going to run into a problem calibrating my system. It's the powered towers that are bugging me. They have 400 watt subs build in which go down to 25hz. Do we have to calibrate all 4 subs seperately?

I'm no expert, but I don't think it's a problem.
They would just be treated as speakers that happen to go down to 25Hz.

Move all the walls out a couple of feet. While you're at it, raise the roof a bit.

'bout 4 hours to get there ... a little more on the way home.
Speeding ticket is a misnomer because getting one just slows you down.

Doing work for Walter was a pleasure. He seemed happy with the results and appreciated the effort. I'm looking forward to seeing some pic's. All you have to do to post pic's is to highlight IMG Code by left clicking on it and doing the copy and paste thing with it in a post. Here's the thread where they taught me to do that in.

Walter, in your BR player menu make sure you're set to output in bitstream. Your B&K processor should have said Dolby Digital when the Blue Man Group played. I have a sneaking suspicion that something is up somewhere along the line. However the vocals on that one track were great. That center has come a long way since I met it last year.

I'm sorry about the speeding ticket! :( I'm sure it wasn't bad as my last ticket (though years ago now), which cost me a sweet $400 w/ traffic skool. Stupid stoplight camera that got me about 0.5" away from line, doing 26mph in a 35 zone, because I wanted to avoid a complete idiot of a driver in a very torrential rain. If a cop was there, I am 1000% sure he would not have given me one. Bummer about that though, sorry.

I'm curious what all happened! I'm sure the mount must be ironclad after your handiwork. :)

The good thing is that I had a driver's license. ;)

We pretty much did what I outlined in the first post along with pulling all the speakers forward and toeing in the mains as was suggested. The weaker sub got ditched. The speakers got level matched and a quick Rives test resulted in bumping the sub 3dB hot. Walter is going to use the Avia II to calibrate his TV and go through their battery of audio checks. I had to rush off to meet that cop.

The mount is there to stay ... and they fed me.
They like to cook and as luck would have it ... I like to eat.
Fat people usually do.

That pic I posted is the amp I got from Walter. Wait until I take some more pic's of that bad boy. The back is like the most radical looking alien technology looking heat sink and power supply exposed.

Walter, that rear surround amp business is going to want the speaker connections swapped and double checked to make sure that I didn't short any wires to the shield. Wait until we talk before you turn it back on. Are you still sleeping?

Simply amazing what a proper calibrated system sounds like. I'll get back to you all since I am a little tired right now after watching Alex crawl on the floor for about 10 hours. Will get into more details this afternoon and will post pictures of Alex's work. He did this with such love. Thanks Alex, you should do this for a living. BTW I changed the cable and surround rears are working fine. Sorry about the speeding ticket. If you got it in the Kingston area I can take care of it for you. Thanks again for all the input from you guy's. Oh it sounds so gooooood.

Help! My mind's eye just went blind. The thought of seeing Alex crawl around on the floor with his plummer's crack sticking out must have blown a fuse.:(

Sorry A. I just couldn't let that one slip past without making some kind of rude remark.

Hey Walt,
Glad that it worked out. Hope you get to enjoy it for a long time before the upgradous bug bites again.

Great, you still have to flip the couch out and swap left and right ... and from there make a determination of whether or not the rear surrounds add or subtract from the sound. A statey got me on the Thru-Way. I thought we had like a war on drugs, a war on crime and a war on terror but what we got is a war on the interstate traffic of monkeys minding their own business. :D

Here's that Carver Model C-500. Tell me that don't look techno. :)

When I think about it I touch myself.
