SV Sound STS and NR807

I recently purchased SV Sound STS Tower package and an Onkyo TX-NR807 receiver. I am a complete newbie to this and was wondering if someone could help me with the settings for all this? I have the gain at the noon position on my sub and the towers crossing over at 40hz.

Which sub? The crossover for each speaker set should be set at 80 Hz in the receiver. Another option is to run the auto speaker setup and make adjustments afterward.

I have the same setup. After running the Audyssey calibration go in to the Onkyo speaker settings and change the crossover to 80hz for each speaker. Also, under Equalizer settings set to Audyssey. On the sub ( I have the SVS PC-12Plus) I have the gain set at the 10 o'clock position, do this before running the calibration!. Make sure you saved the calibration settings that Audyssey came up with then use that screen to adjust your sub levels (if needed).

Finally on the Audio Adjust screen under Audyssey turn off the Dynamic Volume. You can always turn it back on if the sound levels are all over the place.

everything sounds good other than my sub. It doesn't seem that loud. What volume do you normally watch movies at? Also can you show me a picture of how you have your SSS surrounds mounted and placement? Thanks

Usually for action movies I am between -20 and -13db and the bass is rocking the house hahaha. Im not at home right now but I will post a pic later of them. Essentially they are mounted on the wall about 4' behind the couch and 7' high. They are located about a foot from the corners so they radiate towards the couch center as well as off the adjacent walls. Sounds AWESOME!

I also had problems with the sub until I recalibrated with the audyssey mic. Have you done that? If so make sure you save the settings! Post your distance and calibration settings here and I will see how they look compared to mine.

Give SVS a call. They were more than happy to spend time tweaking mine until I was getting the results I expected from the sub.

Good Luck!

I am going to mount the speakers off the ceiling behind my couch. The backs of the speakers will be facing the wall behind me and the 'point' if the speaker will be facing the tv. essentially like being mounted on a wall with no wall behind. would that be the correct way?

You have a large space to fill, and the single NSD just isn't enough.

I'm getting in here late but 3 things need attention. 1) in a 5.1 system the surround speakers go to the side, with a 7.1 the surrounds do to the sides and the rear. 2)Audyssey just gets you close. Double check the distance to the speakers settings with a tape measure, and then use a radio shack SPL meter to double check volume level balance. Keep in mind that rat shack meters read roughly 6db low and you need to adjust the subwoofer's volume up about that much to make up for it. 3) You need to adjust the subwoofer's phase setting.

Finally you need to double check with SVS to make sure you have enough sub.

I have the digital SPL meter and Im wondering if there is also that much of a discrepancy in the readings? Also, the 6db difference would be for ALL speaker readings wouldnt it? Not just the subwoofer.

I've never personally calibrated a rat shack meter but everything that I read says that their cheap meter reads roughly 6-8db low for deep (~20hz) bass only, and that their more expensive meters are even further off. I use a 6db boost as a rule of thumb and maybe add or subtract a tiny bit by ear.

In other words I adjust all speakers to 0db and the sub to +6db using the tones and then do a reality check by ear with music that I know really-really well.

The link goes to a rough guide.

this is how everything sits for now... might move the sub around to see better results. It's in that back right corner next to the wall and couch hidden in the pictures. Also the surrounds might be mounted too high and too far back but I think that's where they're going to stay regardless.
