This has been available on BD for a rather long time now. You might be mistaking a new release for something else, perhaps Life (BBC)?

It is IMO that PE is not of demo/reference quality. I think the content is awesome, but that is my take on the matter.

The best PQ for documentaries I have seen are Grand Canyon River at Risk IMAX, and Galapagos.

However, the GC IMAX is rather short, so it may not offer as much value, depending on how you look at it.

depends how much you buy it for. i bought it for $40 at costco, and its definitely worth it. I haven't watched the whole thing, but its pretty interesting stuff. I'll probably be getting the "life" documentary too.

I only have the DVD version but IMO still worth the money. Fwiw...I love all nature shows, it's to bad they're not all broadcast in HD:(.

Regards, Bill...:)

Definitely worth buying and yes there is a BBC version and a US version. The BBC version is much better because the US version has Sigourney Weaver narrating and IMO, it isn't the same. This has been out for over 2 years. BBC is releasing the new series that is a follow up to Planet Earth called LIFE on BD soon though.

I hope it is the same for the Life because Oprah can't narrate her way out of a paper sack. She stinks up the whole show.

Edit: just checked and it is; thank God! it is David Attenborough. http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Life-Blu-ray/8271/

Make sure you get the BBC version, not the US released Discovery channel edition. The original BBC version is 1080p, the US version is 1080i and, IIRC, shorter. The price fluctuates a bit, while I've seen go on sale for just under $40, the normal price seems to float ~$50.

Most of the footage was shot from quite a distance so it's not all reference material. Still it's some of the clearest and best nature footage I've ever seen. While when I first watched it I was a little disappointed with the PQ due to all the hype, I expected crystal clear shots throughout, overall I am very happy with it and have watched it in it's entirety several times. It is by far one of the best nature films I've seen. I highly recommend it.

Apparently there are actually 3 versions on BD. The good UK version (1080p) has a herd of elephants with white birds overhead on a grassy plain on the cover and says "BBC video."

There is similar covered version that says "BBC DVD" and has elephants in a river, this one is 1080i. As is the one that has the sun rising over the planet and says "Discovery HD Theater" near the bottom.

I'd have to say there must be another version I haven't seen. I'm looking at mine right now and it's the same cover but definately says 1080p.:confused:

Sigourney Weaver??? What's up with that - David Attenborough's english not good enough?:p

How did they do that anyway? Dub Sigourney's voice over David's? Paste her head over his? :D Or, did they insert complete footage of her?

I'm curious, because I bought a compilation set (DVD) up here, from Costco, with Blue Planet, Planet Earth, Life of Mammals and Life of Birds. All feature David Attenborough. The best DVD purchase I ever made. The whole family loves it. It ain't BD, but the content is still awesome.

I just have one observation and I wonder if anyone else has noticed. While David is narrating, his voice primarily comes from the centre speaker. I say primarily, because occasionally, his voice "spreads" into the mains as well, for no particular reason that I can figure. I don't believe it's receiver setup issue, because I've never heard this phenomenom from any other DVD.
