"Power Save"...On or Off?

Band,

These settings I provided were made with THREE different calibration discs, not just "guessed" on my behalf; for example, you say to put BRIGHTNESS on "50" but that would cause HORRENDOUS black crush on my set -- 50 isn't correct at all according to the Pluge Pattern tests.
Again what is your work flow to arrive at these settings? Using 3 discs, did they all come up with the same answer? Did you average them? Is your blub "old"? My adjustments were meant to help correct the issues you herein described, so since you know what your doing enjoy the display;)

I first used a standard definition DVD calibrator, which I have trusted for many years, then the settings were confirmed by a THX Optimizer and its various patterns and then I moved on to the Spears & Munsil Blu-ray, which assisted me in setting the Sharpness (and which confirmed my Brightness setting), since any sharpness pattern on a standard DVD calibration disc doesn't seem to work on my set -- only HD patterns seem to make a difference as I raise and lower the sharpness value. Using the Spears & Munsil disc, I came to a setting of "25" based on where the artifacts stopped ringing around the edges.

I am on my very first bulb, and I've had the set for around two plus years now.

Are you getting the feeling that the bulb may be much of the problem here?

I'm noticing a distinct drop in light output, I believe...
that would be about right. A Bulb's half life isnt very long and need to be replaced soon after.

Do I need to replace it now, or can I wait until I get the flashing red light and message? I haven't received this message from the TV yet, and the power light is still green at the bottom of the bezel -- shouldn't I get a RED indicator down there when the bulb is really going?

Also, do you know how to replace the bulb? I know there are supposed to be user-replaceable; can you walk me through the process, possibly?

Id order a new bulb regardless to have it on hand.
Its in the manual and pretty straight forward. Id look at the hours and you can do additional tweaks in the SM.

Using the remote control:
Turn the TV off.
Press {DISPLAY} {5} {VOL+} {POWER ON} buttons.
or
Press {DISPLAY} {5} {POWER ON} buttons.
The Service Menu will be displayed.
Use numbers {1} and {4} to select the item to adjust.
Use numbers {3} and {6} to adjust the value of the data.
Press {MUTE} then {ENTER} to save new settings.
The words "WRITE" in red will show up in the upper right corner if saved.
Turn the TV off to exit the service menu.

I am NOT going to trust myself to do tweaks in the service menu; I have read about way too many horror stories about people that have completely and utterly messed their displays up doing this. I know you can return to a default level at some point, but I simply won't do it. I'm fine with adjusting the user controls to a certain point. :)

And in this menu there's a place to check your bulb hours?

Depends on when your going to replace it and how much you can get out of the current bulb:eek:
I see...

Well, I'll probably just let this bulb go out and then re-calibrate because the settings I'm sure will be a bit different due to the intensity and such from the new bulb...

Another interesting tidbit, though: I threw in the BD of Iron Man last night, and switched the picture mode back to "Custom" with the calibrated settings there...in the Advanced menu, these were:

EVERYTHING OFF EXCEPT FOR DETAIL ENHANCER: HIGH

I had to stop the disc like about halfway through because I just didn't like the image or impact from the film...granted, I'm a good deal away from my 50" screen at 11 feet, but I was totally not immersed in the action, especially dark sequences. I chalked this up to the Custom mode delivering a bit more of a "warm, smooth film like" image that was a bit too dim for my tastes; changing the mode back over to "Standard" and watching The Proposal on standard DVD was a completely different experience -- the image became brighter and more involving and the screen didn't seem so "far away" and "un-theater-like"...I know this sounds weird, but I think I will stick with Standard and re calibrate in that mode when a new lamp arrives (using Neutral, NOT Cool, color temp of course).
