The question that begs to be asked is:
Why (for example) is it cheaper to manufacture a box of toothpicks in China and ship them around the globe to the USA, and still sell / price them competitively? Hint: Labor costs & economies of scale.
Don't bet that the toothpicks are actually made in China. I don't know if it's still done this way but the Japanese plywood manufacturers used to buy lumber on the West Coast, load it onto their ships and go out to International Water. They would then cut the logs to the appropriate length, strip them, shave and trim the layers and glue them into sheets before cutting to final size. They bundled the finished product and brought it back to the US, selling to the distributors here. Since it wasn't "Made in Japan", the duties and tariffs were different, until the FTC caught on. Look around- a lot of building materials aren't made here. Plywood, dimensional lumber, etc is often made in Central or South America. We can't cut enough trees to feed the demand for lumber.

With the average wage being $32.32/hr, a full year pay (2080 hours) comes to $67,225 and if someone at that base rate works 500 hours at time and a half, it comes to $91,465.60, so a long-time worker can make over $100K.
50 hours a week at an auto assembly plant for a year straight does sound like a cakewalk ...

Dave ... HELP ME !!! :D

A friend of mine from high school worked for Delphi for about 30 years.
Only 30 years and he already paid for all that?
You make 30 years sound like a joke.

Attention speaker builders! A lot of the MDF we use is made in Chile. Guess who had a recent earthquake. Guess which industry has been adversely affected. Then, guess what is going to happen to the price of MDF as a result....

Just heard about the MDF issue on the news a few days ago.

You haven't seen his toys. He hasn't really done anything to make money in almost 5 years, he tools around on his 32' boat, goes diving in Lake Michigan to explore the wrecks, hangs out, etc.

30 years is no joke, trust me. I have been in this business for 32 years and, well....

The sign company is still crying about you going on to greener pastures.
I'd still be there if they could compete with my current salary, and they still keep in touch with me to consult. I was there just two weeks ago on my day off. :p:cool:

We should just nuke China and turn Eastern Asia into a parking lot.

I just knew you were an awesome sign maker.

Hanging drywall in Manhattan probably pays over $50/hr with the annuity plus benefits so if you're not making that in your current job I guess you'll be calling ... but you gotta be able to beat out all the uneducated, unskilled scumbags from pretty much the world over to make it past your second day. I know you got it in ya, champ. :D

Cakewalk. Yeah. That's exactly what I would call it. Oh, yeah.

re: hanging rock- I'll be right there. Do they care that both of my shoulders are toast and I got a trigger finger from the way I held my mud pan when I refurbed my house? Next time, I'll use a hawk.

I'm making a note not to compete with either of you in a Cakewalk... ... Ever!

It is clear both of you are fierce Cakewalk competitors. I wish you luck in your next cakewalk.

Actually, now that I look again, I don't see Kelly-Moore in the ratings.
I think Behr and Kiltz did well in the low-luster paints. Valspar no 3, Glidden 4, BM 6;
Flat &matt, SW 8.
Semi-gloss SW 10, Behr 1.

I checked that post out. CR has no clue how to test the paints? LOL. Clueless poster there.;):p Not a surprise.:D
