I'll throw my two cents in here (I know I know... the collective groan heard around the world) There are a couple of standby things that I always look for when I interview people-

1) Shoes - should be clean and polished
2) Fingernails - not chewed
3) Watch - wear one... the right way on the left wrist

1&2 tell me you not only care, buy are aware that your appearance reflects on you and who you work for.

3 tells me that you're aware of time. If you don't wear a watch, and I'm not saying it has to be expensive, just a watch. If you don't have a watch, how do you know what time it is? I know, I know... we all carry 20 mobile devices which tell us the time, but a watch serves no other purpose so it tells me you're cognicent of time management.

lastly, a firm diliberate handshake with good eye contact is key. keep us posted. Good luck my friend!

I second these recommendations. They may not seem overly important on the surface, but they can make subconscious impressions on the interviewer. If the competition is close, it may come down to little details like those.

I am a bit late to the party. It has been a rough few days as my Mom is in the hospital. She has pneumonia. Anyways, good luck with the interview. I haven't worn a watch in years. Anyone who would base their decision to hire or not hire someone based on whether they are wearing one or not, instead of their experience, is not really worth working for. Someday, you could get fired for saying that you like the Yankees, or that you put A1 on your steak.

Not really , but I love watches...

My current job isn't terribly demanding. I would work hard if it was necessary. I sometimes wish it was more demanding, but they pay me just well enough to not look elsewhere. I make up for it at home - I am no couch potato, by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, although I get along really well with my neighbours, they get irritated by me, because their wives see me always working on something around the house, then give their husbands the evil eye.

Seriously, now that I have read Chris' opinion on watches, you wouldn't catch me dead without one in that time for first impressions. Greg stands outside of these guide lines as he's successful and can make up his own rules but unless you just bought a $40k pool and a $10k diamond you better get a $20 watch for your unemployed @ss. Another reason not to go by what Greg does is cause he's slick ... real slick.

I have a Seiko and a Swatch (that I got in Switzerland). The Seiko has a dead battery that went out recently, I still wore it to an interview... I just moved the time close to the time it was... which is pretty fancy of me I think I have one suit, and wear it to any interview that requires it. It's one of those things, you buy a suit, you never get to wear it, so you just wear it to interviews or when you go out to the grocery store to look like some form of important businessman. Just attach a cell phone to my head and start saying things like "No, don't sell the Jossman accounts just yet, they will have fiscal-importance in the next year, no, don't go over my head on this one or you're fired!" and stuff like that, people would think I'm pretty important.

I agree on the watch thing... Had a good mentor a few years back that told me before I venture out into some kind of professional life, buy the most expensive watch I could afford. It wasn't much at the time, but it gave me a lot of confidence and pride during interviews, appointments. I never don't wear a watch when business is concerned. It was great advice. I'm currently saving for a new one.
