Deciding between Eqik/SVS.

Hello all -

First off, I'm brand new to this category of subwoofers, but have been reading everything I can get my hands on for the last week to get up to speed on the acronyms and nomenclature that people use to describe subwoofers. I'm looking to purchase a decent subwoofer and from everything that I've read it would appear that two subs that are within my budget, Epik's Empire or the SVS PB12 Plus, that either would be a great choice. I would look to use it for 75% movies/25% music in a 14' x 22' x 9' living room that opens into the kitchen. I don't see myself as tweaking all the settings on the sub...I'm more of a plug it in and go type of person.

I realize that these brands have a rather passionate customer following, but any advice/suggestions/input would be appreciated. Is there a big difference between the two of them?

If you can handle a larger sized sub, I would go for a Elemental Designs A7-350 over either the SVS or Epik. It's the same price and likely a more powerful subwoofer. However, it is a bit larger and heavier, but they do not charge for shipping if you go fedex for the continental US.

Imo best way to proceed is by giving SVS a call and consult with them about which sub would be best for you.
You have rather large space (especially if it's open to other rooms) and PB12 Plus might not cut it...

A sub is sized based on the entire space and not just the listening area. I would contact SVS and Elemental Designs and have them size you a sub.

i have an 18' square room with vaulted cielings and an open side wall with my stair case going down. and my Epik Empire just kills.. i'd say its onloy weekness is critical listeing music but rap. hip hop and hard rock its killer.

i love the company and think they have a great well made quality product. i'm sure the others are equally as good with strenghts and weekness's

Same Situation

I have a 20x24x11 foot room open to another 4500cu/ft. I kept reading and was worried about settings and duals. I borrowed a friends SVS 25-31+ this past weekend and was very impressed by it. Didn't mess with settings much, just activated the sub in my receiver.

I called SVS and Epik, and explained my situation and how I was weighing out the plus and Empire. I bought the Empire Monday. I will have my Empire Friday, and will post how it sounds to the naked ear on Saturday.

vote for PB12-Plus

I think the PB12-Plus can handle you room size very well!

Peace and Good Sound,

Forest Man

EDIT P.S. - Sorry I didn't read down far enough to find you had already decided on the Empire, Good Luck! -- EDIT2 ( glad you got info from OP's thread)

EDIT2 - OP, I would still recommend the PB12-Plus; I have one in a room your size and it works very well. Later if youwant really, really deep, loud bass.. add a second PB12-Plus

Received the Empire today. Just plugged and played it. Impressive, even in my huge area. It shipped Tuesday, and it arrived today. I live outside New Orleans.

I had played some Man on Fire scenes and a music cd through my friends SVS 2531+. With no adjustments, same location, etc, the Empire definately has the edge. Very happy I went this route, and the Empire was $200-$300 cheaper than the PC12+.

With that said, I believe the PC12+ is a step up from the 2531+. I think either would be great.

Cool, glad your happy with the new Empire...

Nothing like a good dual opposed design for extra output in a smaller design - I really think Epik made a great decision in putting out a dual opposed sub for a cheap as they did. I'll bet the sell alot of them. I would think a pair of these would easily give the Ultra 13's a big run for their money... though their stamped driver doesn't measure up to the build quality of SVS's... Maybe SVS will have a Dual Opposed design up their sleeves in the future....

Can't wait to get my Dual opposed 18" LMS's up and running - hopefully next week if all works out right...

Stealth gloat alert!

You got a thread or pictures for those bad boys?

PS: You suck!

Apologies to the OP, but he could probably suck his brains out of his ears with those things!

Ahhhh - ya caught me.... I guess I'm just very appreciative of the Dual Opposed design... I have been wanting to go this route for quite some time...

Haven't started a thread yet....
6 LMS Drivers are in house, as are the amps, 4000w each per driver.

Subbed out the box building to John at AE Speakers, which will look like the first and last box in this thread http://forums.audioholics.com/forums/showthread.php?t=64085

Just goes to show there is always something better to be had. Very nice warp. What is the plan for the ridiculus subs you already have?
