iPhone to control Windows Media Center

I am now using my iPhone to control my recently re-minted Windows MCE machine.

I have both the Logitech Touch Mouse control and server installed and NControl.

The Touch Mouse basically turns your iPhone into a keyboard and mouse, NControl maps the UI controls for browsing and manipulating the MCE interface to the phone.

Issues with Logitechs Touch Mouse are that the service only appears to start after login. This is a problem because you can't use the iPhone as a keyboard until you have logged in. You have to have a keyboard to enter a password to log in. See the dilemma? Also you really need to slow down the mouse point scroll rate. At it's default it is way to erratic.

NControl I only have kudos for. It does exactly what needs doing.

This is the reason I gave up on iphone controls first place, instead boxee with Dell MCP IR receiver and universal remote (i use harmony 880) works fine for me :)

p.s: Whats to reason to have password on htpc anyways?

Because Windows Server and XP pro will not let you make UNC connections with a blank password.

My general work around has been to use Power Toys... But with that being said I generally don't like to work around this particular feature.

I like some semblance of keeping my network secure. Call me kooky that way. I am still not to impressed that Logitech didn't make the start up type for Touch Mouse a user instead of system. I will see if I can change that. Just haven't had time.

I shouldn't have to breach security is the way I look at it (yes even at home).

There is another app you may want to look at. It costs a couple bucks but it is also more powerful and more customizable.

MobileAirMouse Pro was one of the first apps I purchased for my iPod Touch. I use it all the time on my laptop. It does have the same limitation in that the service does not start until you log in. It has lots of options. There is an application switcher and even a gyro mouse. There are media controls and web browser buttons and the server app lets you customize the buttons to work with just about any application.

I saw that one along with the Red Eye and Red Eye Mini. The Red Eye Mini is around $180 but looks like a comprehensive solution.
