Kenwood AM-FM Stereo Tuner (KT815 Model)

I am new here on the forums and I really need some help! A friend of mine gave me his old Kenwood Stereo system because his wife was making him get rid of it. Well The receiver works but the Tuner is not working. The lights come on and the dial turns the station properly. Anyways he told me this system was bought around 1980. So I am trying to figure out if it is worth getting fixed?

Two other quick questions. I saw an antenna port on the back of the receiver. I am not sure if the receiver needs an external antenna. Because that might be all that is wrong with it. There is a stick like object on the back and I think it might be an antenna. But then where the antenna ports are there is nothing plugged into them.

Secondly I was kind of hoping if anyone has any experience with this unit if they could tell me some things that might be wrong with it that I could possibly check myself? I hate to invest a lot in it if it's not going to be worth it.

Any FM radio needs an antenna. At that date it will need a good one, preferable a roof one. That unit likely does not have PLL technology in the receiver's FM tuner, so will require greater signal strength then later models.

That's not a bad tuner, though not one of Kenwoods best; it went for $440 back in 1979.
As TLS said, you do need an antenna.
Much depends on how high your antenna is and how close the station is that you want to listen to.
The "stick like object" you mention, is the AM antenna.
