I'm such a failure!!

I'm trying to hook up my new components and I don't have audio with my PS3. I have a Samsung LCD, Denon AVR-488 receiver, and the aforementioned PS3 as my blu-ray player. I received some advice that stated the receiver is "pass-thru" audio only. I bought some HDMI and 2 optical cables.

I've been playing with this since last night and heard so many different way to connect everything and I'm just in brain lock mode. Can somebody please give me instruction (more detailed the better) on how to hook this up including the input/output settings. Thank you sooo much.

The first thing obviously to do is connect the receiver and PS3 via both HDMI and optical. On your receiver, you need to assign the HDMI input and optical (digital input) to the source you want (page 22 of the manual). That should allow you to get both video and sound to the correct input on your receiver.

On the PS3, you need to go into the setup menu and select video output as HDMI and turn on the optical output. The video instructions are on page 18 of the manual. Basically you go to (Settings), then (Display Settings), then [Video Output
Settings] and follow the prompts. For the audio, there should be a prompt at the end of the video setup that asks you what connection you are using. Choose Digital Out (optical).

I'd suggest connecting the PS3 directly to the TV to do its part of the setup. Once that's done, plug it into the receiver to see if you set the receiver up right. Hope this helps!

I'm not having any luck, I've gone over what you've said, but, when I change the input on the receiver to DVD/HDP it switches back to the TV/CABLE but with no sound(the receiver shows DVD on the display). I don't know what info you need to troubleshoot but fire away and I'll let you know what is what connected to where. Thanks again.

That's weird. Which inputs are your cables plugged in to? Also, what inputs are does the setup menu say are set to DVD, Cable, etc? Can you get sound from the TV/Cable and how is that connected?

To simplify things with the receiver, you could try just doing all video cables to the tv, and audio cables to the receiver.

So the PS3 hdmi to the tv, and the PS3 optical to the receiver.

I have the HDMI cable from the PS3 to (assignable) HDMI #1 (dvd/hdp) on the receiver, the cable box is connected to #2 (tv/cable), I have optical from both the cable box and the PS3 connected to optical 1 (cd) and optical 2 (vcr) respectively. I have the PS3 set up for video via HDMI and optical audio. The receiver (inputs) are assigned the same way as I have the cables connected.

I have the tv/cable working fine, I just cant seem to get a blu-ray in the PS3 to work. Is the receiver having a problem identifying the signals, could I just reconnect all the components one at a time?

I'll give this a try, thanks for the input!

I got it!

just for s**ts and giggles, I connected the HDMI from the PS3 to the TV and BAM! I left all other settings and connections the same. Could someone tell me why the receiver won't play the a/v when I had the HDMI connected to the receiver from the PS3?

That's great! HDMI has copy protection built in that requires everything to work perfectly together. A decent number of components don't play nicely so you lose audio, video or both for some unknown reason. This is called a handshake issue and is pretty common. It could be that the PS3 was thinking the receiver could accept audio over HDMI and shutting off the optical out even though that's not how it was set up.

HDMI is screwy and sometimes won't work even though you've got it set up properly. Even the order that you turn your components on in can make a difference. If you're feeling brave, you could play with that and see if you can get it to work.

Thanks again, IF IT AIN'T BROKE DON'T FIX IT!!!

Welcome to AH!

I think the problem you are having is that your Denon AVR-488 does not pass audio through HDMI but only video. Is this an older Denon model (atleast 2 years old?). I know this is the case for the 588 and 688. Run HDMI from the PS3 to the TV (for video) and an optical cable from your receiver to your PS3 (for sound) and your problems should be solved.
