Damn! I Won Half a Gun Last Night.

Seriously, I have no life.
Yea, I'd say that's fairly average for this type of handgun. Better than some - worse than others. I'm not an expert on XD's, but I think a regular XD is around 7.5 lbs, while the XD-M is around 5.5. I have a digital trigger pull gauge I can measure it with, if anyone wants.:)

Trigger pull weight - to a large degree - is dependent on two things: the type of trigger system and the purpose of the gun in question. A self defense handgun typically has a heavier trigger pull than a competition or target handgun. A DAO (Double Action Only) trigger typically is heavier, has a longer reset, and more travel than a single action trigger pull of a SAO (Single Action Only) or a TDA (Traditional Double Action).

There. That's the easy part. Now for the confusing part. A Glock is considered a DAO, while an XD is considered a SAO. But if someone (even an expert) were to compare the trigger pulls of a Glock and an XD side by side, they would swear that the triggers were near identical. Both the Glock and XD are striker fired. What differentiates the two is what happens when the trigger is pulled.

When the slide is racked on a Glock, the striker is partially precocked, and pulling the trigger on the Glock performs two tasks, or "double" tasks: One it finishes cocking the striker, and two it releases the striker.

On an XD, racking the slide fully cocks the striker. So pulling the trigger only performs one task, a "single" task, which is releasing the striker. So while one is a DAO, and the other is technically a SAO, functionally they are nearly identical.

Wait. What was the question?
I understand how they work but the actual numbers seemed high, to me. Part of the reason I asked is that I have a 'trigger finger' on my left hand, from holding a drywall mud pan (incorrectly, apparently) and since I have been looking into handguns, I don't want the same thing to happen on my right hand. OTOH, I don't want it to have a hair trigger, either.

It's not well-known these days. Something about child safety, or something.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mumblety-peg
Never heard of it before, but Damn again, again! That description is strange and humorous.
If a player "sticks" the knife in his own foot, he wins the game by default, although few players find this option appealing because of the possibility of bodily harm.
The possibility of bodily harm? So some players refuse to stab themselves in the foot with a knife because it might cause injury?
And just when I thought it couldn't get any more bizarre, a new variant emerges:
A variant of mumblety peg has evolved as a drinking game where several matches of mumblety peg are played successively. At the end of each, the loser must take a penalty—generally taking a shot of alcohol
"You know Bubba, if we chugged this liter of Jim Beam, throwing knives at each other would be a lot more fun".

This sounds more like a bad parody on SNL than an actual game.

... Anyone else fire one of these? Guns & Ammo had a pretty good review of one of these a few months back which is why I am considering one. It is in the same price range as a 1911 though.
I've handled several XD's, but never fired one before. It is a quality polymer frame gun on par with Glocks, S&W M&P, etc. As for the price, it is on par with an entry level 1911.

My buddy is a competitive shooter and he said he could customize the grip to my hand regardless of what I buy
One of the add on features of the "M" model of the XD is interchangeable back straps, ala the Walther P99 and Smith M&P. The full size XD-M comes with 3 back straps to customize the grip - small, med, lg.

No worries there. 5.5 to 7.5 is fine for this type of gun. No law enforcement agency (except tactical like SWAT) would want any less. I'd say this is pretty average for a quality gun of this type, and the 5.5 is probably better than average.

The near universally accepted "best" trigger for a handgun (liability issues aside) is on a 1911. I'd guess that an average trigger pull of a stock (non competition) 1911 is around 5.5 or 6 lbs. So an XD-M with a 5.5 lb trigger pull is actually quite good. Anything much less in this type of gun might be considered a "hair trigger".

check out the A&G grip extender, or add a pinky or +1 extension to the mags... all the smaller glocks accept the magazines from the larger glocks. I've shot my Glock 26 with a magazine from my glock 19 or my glock 17 in it and it was still comfortable. Nothing like carrying a Glock 26 with a 17 round spare mag full of gold dots or Winchester Ranger SXT ammo :D
Not bad, but I would rather carry the Glock 30 with the 13rds of Corbon Plus P Self defense loads.:D Double taps are for sissies;)

I had a Glock 30 but it was stolen in a home break in... I now have glock 21. I used to use Cor-Bon ammo, I like it... I now use either gold dots of winchester SXT, which is a newer better version of the old Black talon ammo. SXT just means same exact thing :D

Actually, there's not a lot of performance differences in modern self defense ammo. All current design self defense ammo from major manufacturers is very effective.

More important than brand, is matching your chosen self defense load with your chosen self defense gun. The gun and load should be checked for three things: function, accuracy, and POA (point of aim).

POA: Does the bullet hit where you aim (or does it impact 3 feet right and two feet high).
Accuracy: Do all of the bullets group close together, or do they pattern all over the place, like a shotgun.
Function: Does the load function 100% reliably in your gun. Some ammo just doesn't function well in some guns. I generally run 200 trouble free rounds of a particular self defense load through my carry gun before I will trust it.

On a side note, Winchester has/is replacing the SXT with PDX, and Double Tap makes some of the hottest factory ammo available.

And on another side note, I just realized I am no longer a "Junior".

I really meant actual double taps. I did not know there was an ammo brand. I load my own anyways and I have some 180 gr. JHP loads that I worked up for the .45 that shoot really good out of a Glock 21.

I love the Glock 21! I have owned 3 of them, and I will get another. Sadly theya are just too big for a carry piece though:(

OK. I thought you were talking about the company. Excellent ammo company by the way. They have a lot of stuff you can't find anywhere else. I buy some hot 10MM from them that I run through a S&W 610. It'll so anything a 41 Mag will.

Never occurred to me that you'd roll your own. What kind of setup do you have?

I know, I'm not a large person which is why I normally carry my glock 26 or 19, but sometimes I do carry my full size 17 or 21 depending on what I'm wearing or where I'm going.

This Kind:D

Sweet! I haven't bought my own setup yet, but my cousin has a Dillon 650 progressive that I have access to. Each pull of the handle drops a shell out, so it really cranks them out.

But don't feel too sorry for me. Here's some of my factory ammo stash:

So we resolved the ownership issue today. The XD-M has a MSRP of $700, and I have a NIB Browning Buckmark that has a MSRP of $350, that I thought he might like which I offered him for his half. He contemplated, and decided he needed some cash instead. He suggested a $200 buy out, so he took two Frankins and I took the XD-M. We both left happy. But I don't really need another gun - at least that's what my ex wife used to tell me.:)

200 for a new gun? Not bad. There is no such thing as too many guns.

I'm a blade and marker (paintball) kinda guy. Plus in this state it's near impossible to get a license, so home defense is relegated to blades and markers. But hey, reballs with a marker chrono'd at 500fps is usually enough to knock anyone out.
